Defensive reinforcements are high on Neil Adams’ transfer wish list at Norwich City

Norwich City boss Neil Adams is in the transfer market for a central defender to bolster the Canaries’ Championship promotion bid.

City have recruited strike duo Lewis Grabban and Kyle Lafferty over the summer but Adams knows he must try to boost his defensive options.

Club captain Russell Martin, Ryan Bennett and Michael Turner have shared the load in the opening pre-season friendlies and, with Seb Bassong currently out-of-favour, the Norwich manager accepts they need to address their resources in a key part of the pitch.

“We have targets in mind and we are putting feelers out there and we hope we can do something,” he said. “There is one or two areas we need to strengthen and centre-back is an area we are looking at for sure. You have to prepare for injuries and get cover there and that is one part of the squad if we were unfortunate to get an injury or two we could be found wanting.

“Of course you want to add players but I want the season to start tomorrow. I’m ticking the days off in the office and if we could play tomorrow and the transfer window closed I would take it.

“What we don’t want to do is get to the end of the window and see players potentially go and leave the squad in a weaker position and we are not able to replace them.”

Adams revealed he is in no rush to bring in another experienced member of his backroom team after Joe Royle stepped down from a football consultancy role.

“I’ll be looking at it and that will be an on-going thing,” he said. “I don’t have to get someone straight away and as I have said Joe will still be there to help us. It’s no secret when I was coaching the under-18s I would ring him for advice because he is someone I respect and that won’t change.

“We’ll monitor it and if I feel I need to bring someone in I will.”

  • Micah Richards has asked Man City to go out on loan. Now wouldn't that be a coup for NCFC? Although I fear that the Championship might not be his preferred destination.

  • If Royal gave Adams 'a nugget' it would have been look what happened to Gunny, he had a cushy number put his head above the parapet and he was out!

  • I bet Bill Kenwright will be watching "Royal`s" expenses. "Hey Joe, what`s this eight quid for a coop o` tea and a Warmdog from Café Carra? Yer can get six meat & potato pies at Goodison fer that, lad, and a bag o` mint toffees fer joost deserts. And a pint o` Higson`s Worst. Bl0ody fancy soothen mook. Ye`ll be buying Samphire sandwiches next. That green welly county`s gone ter yer head, lad. Sort yerself out or go join that Irish clown at Anfield".

  • Sounds a tad unprofessional to me,alan. A bit like the way Sunday League pubs were\are run in Village Norwich. The board were buying time by dispensing temporary BS. Now that`s done they can settle back into their ring-fenced idyll. More caviare, Stephen?

  • He was not .......on! I stated on appointment of royal that this was a strange one as he already could seek advice from royal whenever he wanted....Perhaps royal felt he should be given a retainer for the nuggets he had given Adams? When royal was offered a job with his beloved Everton,of course he should n did take it and with our blessing and again like I stated on here before Adams revealed it,Royal will still be there to help him ,but now for free again..

  • Truth is Adams has no say in who is sold if 'The Price is Right' they will go, he is a 'yes man' that is why he was chosen, as for him ringing Royle for advise Adams hasn't got the message yet-he has been sh@t on- end of story.

  • Speaking of Pa Snipps, Uncle Stew, I wonder if we will ever see his `Chevron` formation? Neil seems quite keen on the `Diamond`. At least `Hughton`s Hendecagon` is no longer an option. Or the `Robert Randomagon`. Anyway, we do not have 11 goalies any more... A few more months, and you`ll be tucking into vast helpings of Ma Snipps` dumplings, and I`ll be soothing my way thro` match commentaries on Radio Partridge with lashings of Dubya`s Eritrean Parsnip Wine.

  • Interesting exercise..... I will re-word leaving out the bit about the legal implications of a certain action. The highlight of sportsmanship and good fellowship must have been a trip to the old Lansdowne Road for an England Ireland game. Mr.Brewer's comments about the Watford game are a sad reflection on society in general. I remember as a lad attending a match at Highbury where we we lifted by some Arsenal supporters, passed overhead to the front of the terrace amidst cries of "let the kids see the game properly". 2-2 draw, Bobby Tambling and Joe Baker scoring.

  • True Colin - if messers Bassong and Adams are going to continue their bundle in the playground an additional centre half would seem a minimum requirement to cover "potential" injuries.

  • At least one centre half is desperately needed in my view. Turner, Bassong and R Bennett are all injury-prone.

  • .....I too am of the opinion that the level of ability in the top 5 in the Championship is on a par with the bottom 3 in the Premiership....I also believe that coming 17th in the Prem should give that team a place in the play offs over the 6th place in the Championship!.....

  • This is journalism, wac, but not as we know it. Though, in fairness, if it was a direct quote, it potentially was Neil`s "bad". A kindly journo potentially might have paraphrased it to spare Neil`s potential blushes, but perhaps the journo knows no better?

  • Is the standard in the top half of the Championship really that much lower than the bottom half of the Prem ? If so, why do relegated teams find it so difficult to gain promotion? Therefore, it would seem that additional defensive options may POTENTIALLY be quite handy.

  • How does one "Potentially go"? Is it a variation on the (illiterate) Star Trek theme "To potentially go where no man has gone before"? I'm off to make a potential cup of tea. O dear I can't find the potential kettle.

  • ,....What the devil do we need to spend good money on bringing in defensive players for?....We Have a defence here already, made up of Premiership experienced men...yes they were not too sharp in that league, but will be working at a lower level this time around!....Just get rid of the shirkers, and encourage the others to work together as a unit!.....

  • Keep hearing Hangelaand but no1 he was on literally massive wages, no2 he spent long periods injured over last few seasons and no3 im not convinced at his age he would be looking to come to a championship club that likely in his eyes (maybe not ours) a smaller side than fulham in stature. Please defensive additions are on the agenda. Personally i'd be looking at a good up and coming player or someone overseas unless we can get some experienced not expecting to play each week. Keeping everyone happy otherwise could be an issue. At championship level I really feel Bennett is ready to step up and deliver on all the potential he has. Turner will be expecting to be 1st choice of course and then it seems clear Adams (as well as gordon strachan) wants Martin playing centre back. Going to be hard enough keeping those 3 happy. Then Add another into the mix and it wont be long until we are back where we are now with only 3 Centre backs as 1 will have got fed up and put his parts on. Adams comments above sound very much like hes fully expecting to lose someone else.

  • Agree with Michael Merrill. From an Everton viewpoint, surely Mr. Kenwright won`t be too happy with paying Uncle Joe`s wages while he`s out putting in a freebie shift for Norwich? Unless we have a `special relationship` with Everton? Anyway, Neil still has Stevie Fry near and handy for technical advice.

  • I think the club needs to have two valuations in their heads for the players we want to keep. First one is a figure that is ridiculous money but at a time when we could replace them. Second for when the Prem clubs get really desperate at the end of the window and we have little time to replace. I'd prefer a statement of "He is not for sale" but in reality does that deter the other clubs and agents from stirring things up?

  • Why oh why have we not snapped Hangelaand up. One of the best Central defenders the premiership has seen in the last decade and available after his release from Fulham. He, again, had all of our strikers single handedly in his pocket at craven cottage. Brilliant player, brilliant leader.

  • "Joe will still be there to help us".... That line doesn't really install much confidence, it's a tad worrying when our manager has a plan of contacting JR (Technical Director of another club) when he needs advice!!! Seems farcical.
