Declan Rudd will start against Luton Town in the FA Cup this weekend – but Norwich City boss Chris Hughton insists the ideal scenario is to get the Diss-bred youngster out on loan in search of regular football.

Hughton made experienced goalkeeper Lee Camp his first January window signing earlier this week. The Northern Irish international is ineligible to face the Hatters after featuring for Nottingham Forest earlier in this season’s cup competition, but his arrival has a two-fold benefit for Hughton, with injured first choice John Ruddy on the sidelines.

“I just felt it was right going into this second half of the season to add some experience,” said Hughton. “To put that pressure on Mark Bunn, which is always valuable in terms of getting competition and that is something which is much-needed at any level, but also because we have got two potentially good young goalkeepers. With Dec, certainly, I would think it is the opportunity to get him out on loan because he has played a minimal amount of games, if we are talking about 90 minutes, at senior level. I just felt the balance of the two factors, with having that experienced competition at the top end and the opportunity for the younger lads to get that valuable experience. The decision to bring in Lee came up fairly quick so we will certainly be doing our work now about trying to get the younger lads possibly out on loan.”

Hughton was quick to allay fears Camp’s arrival is a signal Ruddy’s return from thigh surgery may take longer than expected, with the England international still on course to be back before the end of the current campaign.

“We are very much hoping he will be ready before the end of the season, but it is still a fair amount of time that he is going to be out,” said Hughton. “That being the case, we had to make sure we gave ourselves the best possible chance and the best possible cover.”

Sebastien Bassong (calf) has trained this week after being left out of the Premier League defeat at Liverpool as a precaution. Fellow defender Steven Whittaker is also back in training after his lay-off with a hip injury. Hughton plans to factor in Tottenham’s pending league visit to Norfolk next week in his final decision on whether to include the duo against the Hatters.

“Seb has trained okay this week and he would certainly be alright for Tottenham,” he said. “Whittaker, possibly too early for Saturday. He did his first training session with us on Monday. It might be too early for him, but what we might see is him on the bench this weekend.”

Hughton confirmed midfielder Andrew Surman will definitely feature against Luton, but the Norwich boss has ruled out starting roles for the likes of George Francomb, Korey Smith or the Murphy twins.

“No, it is too soon and that is not anything detrimental to Josh or Jacob. They are coming along very well but at this moment it is too soon to be considered,” said Hughton. “I shall be making changes. Andrew Surman will play, Declan will play in goal and what we will have, obviously, is decisions to make on the starting 11, but it will be a strong squad.

“Whatever changes I make if I look at the 18 involved they will be all ones who have been involved in first team. Generally we have a squad that is fit, apart from Whittaker, who is just coming back, and John Ruddy.”

Hughton revealed striker Steve Morison (thigh) is not under consideration before City’s next Premier League away trip to QPR.

I'm not sure King's Lynn is looking for another goalkeeper right now they seem to have one good enough for the time being. I think after the Norfolk Senior Cup the Linnets would be more interested in taking the Murphy twins - do you think there's any chance? :-)

Saw the headline and thought DR had a team arranged to go to . Read the article and no he has not.Hope the 2nd half of the season loan is a tad better than the first half. Bunn was supposed to let Declan out on loan[ i know JR got hurt but a sensible loan would have had a recall in it].

I think it would be a good idea if we thunk about what we were going to put on these postings before rashing to get them on here. There must be one or two educated to a high enough standard, to get their spilling rite, without leaving it all to me. So from tomarrow could we all tarn over a new leaf, cut out the com madee and jist be serious for a bit. I adopted the Headless Chicken name just before the 10 match unbeaten run to reinforce a few comments towards the panickers amongst you MB. Also intended as humorous but lost it's impact when we were closer to 4th place than 18th. It somehow seems more relevant again now - and I did get loan from Steady On but didn't find your sarcasm as clever as you did.Sorry

Ah my bad, was reading it wrongly. As for the other part though, it is always going to be L1 - Championship, never a hint of suggestion for it being a team as low as King's Lynn, he's a well rated keeper and I guarantee there will be plenty of interest, no clubs will feel forced. They have plenty of time to make a decision too so there's no pressure. Learn to communicate.

I actually wrote you can't force a club to take a player on loan, but don't let a little thing like that get in the way of your post. A suitable club needs to be found, a good loan, not a small time one that we could get for him instantaneously ala King Lynn. Learn to read.

Steady On, do you actually know anything about football? And nobody ever mentioned anything about King's Lynn, jees this is embarrassing. He's not being 'forced' it'll obviously be a mutual agreement that he'll be made available for loan to gain first team experience, a player of his caliber involved in the England youth set-up will most probably attract the interest of L1 or Championship clubs.

Declan Rudd would benefit from a loan to a Championship team. Risky to have played him during the recent tough run of fixtures. Has a suitable loan come up? Have potential loans be turned down as unsuitable? No good lending him out to a team too far down the pyramid.

couldnt agree more headless chicken. Why the abuse when someone challenges your view MB? We are all entitled to our views. i've noticed Steady On being on the receiving end on other articles for essentially stating things in a more supportive of Chris Hughton way. i completely agree with steady on. he needs to out on loan getting regular first team football so he can prove what he can do rather than go in to the first team with little experience and possible concede 4-5 goals and have all self confidence ripped out of him. MB you seem to comment on nearly every article on this site and rarely have anything positive to say. hughton is the manager and knows best. if you think you no better why arnt you the manager. get real!
