Declan Rudd is up for the fight of forcing his way into the Norwich City first team.

The boyhood Canary knows John Ruddy and Mark Bunn are blocking his path but the 23-year-old aims to give City chief Neil Adams a selection headache.

“I’ve had a chat with the gaffer and I know I have two really good goalkeepers in front of me,” he said. “Mark Bunn has proved himself, John Ruddy is an England international who is a Premier League goalkeeper, so for me to fight my way past them is a challenge but that is what I love. I love coming to work every day and knowing I have to work hard to push past people.

“That is what I will look to do. I’m looking forward to the season. It can’t come quickly enough. Everyone wants to play football but Norwich holds a special place for me and I want to play here. The manager makes that choice and I have two goalkeepers who I need to work hard to catch up with.”

Rudd insists City will reap the benefit of his successful season-long loan stint at Preston where he played 55 games in the Lilywhites’ charge to the League One play-offs.

“I’ve improved massively,” he said. “The pressure of playing for other people’s jobs in the football club was new and the fan base up there is very similar to here. They expect the same performances and winning every game, which is how it should be. I learned so much and I wouldn’t change any of it.

“I was very pleased how it went on a personal note. I wasn’t expecting to get 50-plus games in one season. I played pretty much every cup and league game. It was just a shame we couldn’t nick promotion because that would have topped it off.

“I loved every minute there, it was great getting games, but I also love coming home. This is the club where I want to be at.”

  • This report was there last Friday, Goldie, but it 'disappeared' for a few days. By the way, MB, your earlier figures for goals conceded in Division One by Preston (Rudd) and other teams last season were correct - mine were wrong. I stand corrected but hope the point was made that if Ruddy should leave, we have a more than capable deputy in Rudd.

  • Personally I would prefer Rudd in goal to Bunn as he has the extra reach that Bunny lacks and stopped him being a very good keeper. Within his limited reach he is a good keeper but I noticed that his short reach was his shortcoming.

  • The whole Olsson saga baffles me. "he WILL have surgery at the end of the season"...."I DONT know if he has or hasnt had it"...."the surgery requires a long lay off"........."he just needed rest".....Im sure deep down Adams knows exactly whats going on but he hasnt done himself any favours making it sound like he hasnt got a clue whats going on at his club. For me if he was going to have the surgery, it should have been directly before the AFC game as we were already down. Club know more than us though. Just hope hes fit come start of the season. Superb player.

  • Mellow Yellow - I'm pretty sure I read recently that Adams stated there was no surgery required for Olsson, and that he only needed time to recover from his shoulder injury. If you didn't see him wincing last year then we must have been watching from vastly different perspectives. He was also clutching his shoulder frequently after collisions with opponents or the pitch - and he had to come to the sidelines ,once or twice, for treatment. I'm a little concerned he's being left out of the squad, right now.

  • This story from last Friday disappeared for a few days and now has reappeared!! Maybe Archie 'ethered' themselves? Anyway, MB, your goals against figures for Preston and others were correct, mine were wrong. Rumours about John Ruddy interesting Arsenal appear to be getting stronger and well reported. He did have a very good game against them on the last day of the season, so probably passed his audition then.

  • Mad Brewer is correct - Kevin 'The Cat' Keelan joined us in the early 60's and Sandy Kennon was at Carrow Road until the mid 60's - so obviously there was overlap. We need to keep Ruddy for any hope of going straight back up. I don't think he'll stay.

  • Yes, WMCanary, I do remember a bit of an overlap between Sandy Kennon and Kevin Keelan. But I think it was more of a phasing in \phasing out thing. Two terrific goalkeepers. D`ye Ken Nethercott? ;-) Am I the only one who cannot see `Highland Canary`s` contributions? Now LincsCan has cited him. I think we have more immediate problems than goalkeeping. A controlling midfielder, a solid centre-back partnership. And a Captain who captains.

  • No Prob Kent Anglian. Totally take your points on board. Dunno I just wasnt overly impressed with the league 1 games I saw him play in on sky last season + the games he played while Ruddy was suspended in the previous seasons. Ill never dispute his ability. Thats second to none, but then again so is Bunns. Rudd just doesn't fill me with confidence. Ruddy is lucky that he naturally is a man giant! Even though he was prone to the odd dropped cross last season, I still had full confidence in him. With Rudd I was seeing the same mistakes last season that I saw with us in the few sub appearances and cup games he appeared in. Just worries me that the gambles too big in this coming season. If we fail to bounce back first attempted and Ruddy of course then says "well I gave you a season, I want to play in the PL now" then I have no issues Rudd going in then. By that point he will be another year older (1 year more in the gym too), have the Preston loan spell and a season of all cup games behind him and the pressure will be off us as we failed to bounce back first time.

  • A few weeks ago a Sunday paper reported that the sales of Snodgrass and Ruddy would fund a bid for Rhodes. The same article suggested Butland on loan from Stoke for the season would fill the gap left by Ruddy's exit. Perhaps though, as Highland Canary suggests, Butland won't be needed if Declan has benefited from his season at Preston.

  • One things for sure. Ruddy needs to be pushed for his position. He wasn't last season and was always going to be the starting choice over Bunn. With more games next season there's a higher likelihood of injury. So I'm glad we've got Rudd as a quality back up.

  • I would prefer Ruddy to go and get millions for him and Rudd be our No 1 rather than leaving him on the bench and ultimately leaving. I believe Rudd is as good as Ruddy now, has never let us down and is definitely better than Bunn. Certainly his distribution is far superior to Ruddy's.

  • Like most I would like Ruddy to stay, but we must not stand in his way if the right career opportunity comes along. I can see Rudd being our first choice keeper for the following 15 years, no worries. We must use relegation in a positive way to re-build for our future, and Declan is part of that.

  • It hadn't really crossed my mind that we might actively try to sell Ruddy, but certainly if someone were to come in with the right money, then I feel we have a more than capable keeper in Rudd. My big worry is that Bunn might still be considered number 2 behind Ruddy though.

  • If you read the other articles tonyb you'll quickly learn that Olsson has recently undergone surgery on a shoulder injury. That might explain why he's not in the team. He carried the injury through the end of last season, and I didn't even see him wince - not once!

  • I agree Mattias.....Bunn is probably on his way somewhere soon. Shame as I think he's a decent keeper - just a bit too short for today's standards. Thing is, could we really have two keepers named Ruddy and Rudd? It might confuse a few of the more regular posters on these boards - especially if a third is added by the name of Rud.

  • Kent Anglian, that "goals conceded" figure for Preston seemed a tad high to me, so I looked up last season`s table. PNE in fact conceded only 46 goals but were bettered by Orient (45), Brentford (43) and Wolves (a niggardly 31). Anyway, Dec did even better than you thought. Of course, I may have looked up the figures wrong - it`s not like you to err! I agree, if Ruddy were to go, Dec has proved he can stand the rigours of a full season and then some. He`d be OK, I`m sure - but I still don`t want JR to leave just yet. ;-)

  • Not often I disagree with you Matt but I think that you are wrong to say that Rudd is 'not ready for first choice week in week out'. Last season, in 46 games Preston conceded 66 goals - only Wolves (57) conceded less. The lad played 55 games last season - very few goalkeepers played more that's for sure. He is ready - no worries!!

  • I would prefer John Ruddy to stay with us next season but if that is not the case, then I would have no qualms at all about Declan being our 'number 1'. I give Hughton very little credit for his work over the past two seasons but he did find loan periods for Declan that have meant that he has returned a vastly more experienced and confident goalkeeper and ready to do a more than capable job for us. I would suggest that there were very few 'keepers who played 55 games last season.

  • Madness if anyone actually wants Ruddy sold. Like Rudd, but hes not ready to be first choice week in week out, especially in such a vital bounce back or stay down season. Hey ho, wait and see. Bunns on way out after he was left out the 21 man squad for tomorrow so id assume Rudd is no2.

  • Tj - What did Highland Canary say?? Surely not something that warranted retro-censorship. I`d hope Ruddy stayed to get us back to the Prem. Maybe, if we fail but he still excels, that`ll be time for his departure. If we succeed and he excels, maybe the same result. Must be a frustrating career being a goalkeeper. Unless you`re No.1 it`s a life of bench-warming duties. It`s rare that 2 goalies share the job. I think Clemence & Shilton did for England? But at club level - anybody know of any examples?

  • Highland Canary - When Declan has played for Norwich he never let the club down and showed real potential. His had two really good seasons at Preston where he has learned his trade we'll. I would sell Ruddy and give Declan the chance to prove himself (which I am sure he will do) and we will have a keeper for many years to come
