Daniel Bloy in class of his own to take East District 30-mile Championship

Daniel Bloy of VeloVelocity repeated his 2013 East District 30-mile Championship win on the Morley-based course, but a rising westerly wind ensured that his time – 1:05:50 – was nearly two minutes slower even though the west Norfolk rider is having his best-ever year.
Bloy had 22 seconds in hand over second-placed James Trenchard (Godric) and 27 on Steve Gorbutt (Diss CC).
Women’s winner was Nikki Hawkes (VeloVelocity, 1:18:38).
Racing all day in the same strong wind was Ben Keeley (King’s Lynn CC) who covered 249 miles in the Eastern Counties CA 12-hour time trial on the Herts/Cambridgeshire border.
Even after 11 hours on the road Keeley still maintained the model of a neat style as he topped the climb at Stump Cross on the way to sixth place overall.
Around 180 people gathered in and outside Colney Woodland Burial chapel for the funeral of former regional Best All-Rounder Robert Matthews (Norwich Amateur BC). Robert, just 47, died of a torn blood vessel after being taken ill on his ride home from work in Wymondham. His BAR-winning year was 2001 when he won the NCA 100 in 3:56:19 – the only sub-four hour ride – after an epic first-half battle with David Gigg and Dave Green, following it up with a win in a rain-swept Breckland 12 hour with 250.34 miles.
In recent years he concentrated on being manager of the under-14s at Rocklands Youth Football Club.
In the final rounds of the MTB National Series on Cannock Chase, Sophie Wright (Team CCN) emerged from a tussle with Emily Wadsworth (Beeline) to win the Youth Female race by 50 seconds, no less, while Jason Bouttell (VeloPro) was fifth in the Elite Men after an early blast at the front.
There was plenty of action in the Diss CC road race on a flattish, quiet course finishing on Knettishall Heath. Anthony Morris from Herts village club CC Ashwell took his first win. Top local finishers were Stuart Pryce (StradSport, sixth), Martin Ruepp (Iceni, ninth) and Liam Gentry (Strada, 11th).
