Coltishall book bowls’ Norwich Cup final place again

Three-time Norwich Cup winners Coltishall reached the final yet again after defeating Bure League rivals Hevingham in the two-leg semi-final.

In the first leg at Hevingham Brian Bunting, Roland Sargent and Willie Jefferies of Coltishall opened with a 13-8 win against former county player David Sharpe while Les Harman’s triple held home skip Alan Bunn to an 8-8 draw. While both pairs sessions saw the teams share the points Sharpe’s second half 8-7 win and Bunn’s draw with Jefferies left the first leg match tied at 8-8. Five nights later Coltishall began the second leg with a bang as Jefferies’ triple won 11-4 and Les Harman’s triple won 10-2. There was a brief recovery from Hevingham as Ian MacLean and Vic Woods won 9-8 in the pairs while Gill Bunn and David Sharpe held Carol and John Aggas to an 8-8 draw. The third session saw Willie Jefferies win 14-0 and Les Harman win 13-3 to put the tie to bed with Coltishall leading 17-11 on aggregate. They will face either seven-time winners Bob Carter or Cromer who drew the first leg of their semi-final 8-8 at Cromer.

In the Bure League Kirby Bedon entertained Halvergate with both teams still in with a chance of the title. A good first half for Kirby saw Selwyn Goldsmith’s triple beat Jack Barrett 16-8 while Phil Watson’s triple won by 15-7 against Robbie Lamb. Joe Brown added a 12-9 win for Kirby against Josh Baxter but a last end comeback saw David Lamb snatch one point for Halvergate by drawing 15-15 against Brian Saunders leaving Kirby Bedon celebrating a 9-1 home win. East Tuddenham are also still in the race after an 8-2 home win against Thorpe Marriott. Geraldine Potter, Chris Turner and John Jeffery won by 30-1 against Bob McPherson’s triple while Robin Amos and Peter Smart both skipped their triples to 12 shot wins. Two nights later Tuddenham saw valuable points slip away in an 8-2 defeat at Woodbastwick where Peter Jablonowski’s triple won 20-7.

In the Thurne League Woodbastwick moved 20 clear after 8-2 wins against both second placed Halvergate and bottom club Hemsby.
