Wantaway Norwich City midfielder Wes Hoolahan has been left in no doubt what is expected of him, according to Chris Hughton.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Hoolahan had a transfer request rejected last week by the Canaries, who also rebuffed Aston Villa’s initial enquiry for the Republic of Ireland international earlier in the window. Hughton revealed yesterday he is trying to limit the fallout with key Premier League games against Newcastle tonight and the trip to Cardiff coming either side of Friday’s transfer deadline day.

“Wes is a player who we have made clear to that the bid we received is not acceptable and that we are not willing to grant his transfer request,” said Hughton. “Around that will be issues like the emotional side of things and how the fans might react and we can’t do anything to control that. It is not about a player wanting to go, because he is not the first and he won’t be the last. We just have to manage the circumstances. I have to decide whether he is in the right frame of mind to be involved. It would not have been our wish for this situation to come around but we now have to deal with it. What I do know is that we are in a much better position to handle any requests for our players compared to a few years ago.

“Wes is one player. We have a squad of 25 and a couple of young players in Josh and Jacob Murphy who have been around it and these are the situations that all managers must deal with. After Friday the speculation stops.”

  • I'm off to Carra Rd tonight, but I can't get myself motivated, I'm going to see the same old same which "He who Knows Best" has dished out since he's been here... might get lucky and see a City goal, the Wolf will miss couple sitters and be subbed on 85mins for a defender... Hooper will go missing then maybe pop in one from 20yds... Snoddy will work himself into the ground with no support... Bassong will be brilliant and rubbish in equal measures, Redman will blast a couple into the Wensum, Fer will look for the pass and only see Black and White shirts cos we can't find the space, we'll pass the ball 10 times to get out of our half, Wes on the bench and coming on for Hooper on 89mins, we're playing stale inafected football.... Worthington like... we must change, we have to change, we have to be effective in our final third, else we are dead meat... shame but fact.

  • CH and the club are correct in taking this stance. Why roll over and let Wes go when it is clearly obvious he will end up with a rival club whose manager has publicised that he is seeking a player of Wes' abilities? It would be daft. Even though Wes does not figure in CH's plans that often its surely good sense to deny a rival of a new (and potentially useful) addition to their armoury is it not?

Pilks had his social media outburst regarding a managers decision, lots of players seem to support Fox's inclusion in the side against Fulham while the manager struggled to even praise him. Ruddy came out in the press on this very site only a few weeks ago saying how he and team cant afford to lose Wes, while the manager constantly side steps any chance to say the same thing. Holt said the comments he did after leaving which could be taken as a bite back at Hughton as he was unhappy leaving, but on top of the other comments made by memebers still in the squad it doesn't look good. Like I said the points mentioned are not my opinion just things Ive noticed. Im not saying I want Fox in the team or Wes to stay etc...just hate how half the team appears in unrest while half seem very much behind the manager (Snoddy & Co etc..). When it comes to how he interacts with players coming onoff etc....he just seems very distant from the players, no eye contact or arm round the shoulder etc. Each to there own maybe but when we score a goal and the players bundle a recently dropped sub only 1 yard away from the manager while he stands there stone eyed looking straight ahead with no emotion of clap to get the players focused etc...its easy to see why I think what I do surely? I could be massively wide of the mark, im not saying im right etc...not my style, everyone is entitled to there opinion and shouldn't be shot down because it differs from someone elses, just how it appears in my opinion buddy.

For any watchers of "Cheers\Frasier", his body language and use of words remind me of the character Dr. Lilith Sternin-Crane, the Ice Maiden rat psychiatrist\psychologist wife of Frasier. • Pierre, of course that is the most correct way of doing things. But it is also a fact that if a player wants away, he can let that be known in public. And normally, the club in that case is not interested in keeping him. So if there is no use for the player - so be it. The problem in this case is of course that Wes has played very well when he has got the chance, and the team has not done particularly well without him, hence CH`s reluctance to load him off. He obviously knows that Wes has qualities, but he doesn`t know how to use them. So get Hughton out and Malky in - that would solve a lot of problems.

  • Once again Hughton does everything but say he wants Wes here. In fact he does the opposite by saying the bid wasnt anywhere near acceptable suggesting that if it had been he'd have been gone. Sends the wrong message. Ill keep saying it until im blue in the face. Maybe im being a tad extreme but im convinced we currently have a manager who is the total polar opposite to Di Canio but effectively achieves the same result as him. When it comes to player morale anyway. So many players seem to be venting unrest as well as former players. Obviously he has a few who back him publicly like all managers do. Just worries me. I hope we come through this, and its be a great fairy tale if we had our own little Alex Ferguson styled story where we stuck by him and he won over the fans, but I do worry with some fans he will never win them back. He just wont be capable of achieving the results needed to win them back. We could win 2-0 tonight (we wont) but unless we create 30 chances, play 2 up front, 1 up front, 1 in the hole, 2 goal keepers etc...everyone is still going to have doubts (myself included). At least Cabaye looks set to leave. Thats one big player for them out the team and they've struggled without him. Thing is it means nothing as we played Newcastle when they had around 10 first team players out injured or suspended last season and couldn't do anything more than a 0-0. Fingers crossed we get a bit of luck tonight......however seeing its Mr Foy as ref tonight we certainly wont be getting any luck. If anything it will be a odd decision against us likely costing us.

You obviously share CHs way of seeing things: When we have got 3 top class finishers in the team, we just have to sit still and wait for them to deliver, and not do something about the support they are getting from the other players. Against Hull CH also sidelined Nathan Redmond - with him and Wes on the bench NOTHING happens forward, and a very lucky goal from Ryan Bennett (yes, the defender) was what saved CH from the sack that time. What will it be next?

We currently have 24 players in our squad discounting Redmond because of age, so can bring one in without dropping another, mind you, Fox is unlikely to feature under CH either as he too works best in a diamond formation. Lets see some explanation as to why we have not managed to get players in yet again.

Hoolahan on a consistent basis can't shoot, can't head, can't tackle and gets blown down in the wind, tending to play his best 'creative' balls in fron of his own penalty area. One swallow doesn't make a summer or in this case, one canary doesn't make team. Replacing Wes to the quality and pedigree of players we've made a trend of going for, will cost a large sum of money. So we'd be stupid to let him go for a small sum. I like Chris, people give him stick but the majority of what he says is true and level headed. Apart from they style of play on the pitch he's not really done anything wrong. We're 12th which again is a realistic position and we can build on if it we win. We will be more consistent when we don't have key players injured. So stop slagging him off at every opportunity and get behind him and the team. Confidence is a big advantage in sport.

Well, I don`t hear about many offers for other quality players either. And in Wes` case, many managers talk about the "big, strong guy" - rubbish, of course, because you don`t need that as a playmaker (look at Modric, for example). And to use Wes qualities you need movement around him - and that is something that can scare managers off. And finally; if other managers don`t see how good a player is, should that stop Norwich from using him?A very strange thought, indeed.

Have a read online. Interested and totally different spin to what myself and many believe is the truth regarding Wes. Wouldnt surprise me if Hoots pulled a surprise and started Wes tonight and he plays a blinder! Failing that Id bet money he comes off the bench and is involved in the winner or equalizer. Seems mad but just got a feeling.
