The 23-year-old jumped 2.23 metres to progress as one of 14 qualifiers for Friday evening’s final, which is scheduled to start at 6.45pm.

He is looking to build on a successful Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, when he just missed out on a bronze medal.

His first attempt failure at 2.25m was to prove decisive at Hampden Park as he lost out on bronze to Canada’s Michael Mason on count-back.

The British number two had started the competition well and had he cleared the height at the first time of asking, he would have taken third, courtesy of Mason’s careless failure at 2.16m.

He will be the only Briton in the final and will face a tough challenge as he has the lowest personal best, 2.27m, of all the finalists and will be up against the likes of Ukraine’s world bronze medallist Andrii Protsenko, who is one of only 12 people to have ever jumped 2.40m.
