Former Norwich City and England striker Mick Channon, now a successful trainer, rarely makes a personal visit to Great Yarmouth racecourse.

But whether or not Channon appears in person this afternoon when the course opens its 2014 season with a seven-race card, a winning day looks a certainty.

Channon runs Wee Jean under claimer William Twiston-Davies in the feature at 3pm, the seven-furlong handicap. The filly was second at Leicester recently and can go one better. Luca Cumani’s Lawyer, bidding for a hat-trick after two Wolverhampton all-weather wins, and Yagheer, from Roger Varian’s yard, rate the main dangers.

In the five-furlong sprint at 3.35pm Channon runs Finflash, a Chepstow maiden winner who looks to have favourite Piazon for Michael Bell and apprentice Louis Steward to beat to take the spoils.

Channon certainly has the upper hand in the 4.10pm maiden where he has the top two in the market, Rough Courte, a filly under Sam Hitchcott and Needless Shouting, a gelding under Twiston-Davies.

There should be plenty of local support in the 2.25pm handicap for Wells apprentice jockey Samuel Clarke who rides Fever Few for his boss, trainer Chris Wall. Kasbhom for William Carson, Darnathean for Sean Levey and First Class for David Probert look the threats.

Another local favourite is five-pound claimer Shelley Birkett, so successful at the course last year. The daughter of trainer Julia Feilden, Shelley rides former course winner The Ducking Stool in the 4.45pm handicap where Ana Shababiya looks the likely market leader.

Megaleka and Dancing Freddy are key rivals in the 5.20pm sprint finale while in the opener Sir Michael Stoute turns out Abseil under James Doyle in the mile maiden.

1.50pm Twin Point

2.25pm Indus Valley

3.00pm Wee Jean

3.35pm Piazon

4.10pm Needless Shouting

4.45pm Minstrel Lad

5.20pm Dancing Freddy
