Carringtons’ stunning success in Frostbites’ Arthur Mann memorial race

Paul and Elise Carrington, watched by Dorothy Mann and seven members of her family, gained a stunning success in Frostbites’ Arthur Mann memorial race sailed last Sunday.

In a Force 1 Easterly, they made a brilliant start to lead the remaining nine entries round the course, finishing a clear five minutes ahead of the second boat. The bulk of their lead was gained on the first round when they enjoyed relatively clean wind while the rest struggled and blanketed each other.

John and Caroline Ellis, sailing Arthur’s old boat Rainbow, proved best of the rest, keeping well in touch with the leading group to come in fourth and move up to second on handicap.

For the first time at Frostbites, a Topper joined the race, sailed by Ellie Edwards, but, despite her good record at Beccles, conditions were unfavourable. Hopefully she will stay on and enjoy better winds.

The main drama occurred earlier just before the start of the delayed Norfolk race when, to the unseemly merriment of spectators led by Vice Commodore Vernon Penketh, a sudden brief gust caught the Commodore (modesty prevents etc) just as his crew was standing on the gunwale adjusting the rigging, and they went horizontal. Bruce Thompson and Kate Mackley were swiftly on the scene, quickly righting the boat and towing her, and the crew, back to base, while both Alan and John’s lifejackets proved equal to the challenge of sustaining their weight during their submersion.

Rollesby wound up their Winter series with more of a whimper than a bang. Roger Wilson took the overall honours in both the first and second single-handed series, winning the second race after leading all the way. The first saw Kevin Postlethwaite and Barry Graver fighting it out, Graver succumbing at the last gap, but both saving their time on Laurence Milton’s Phantom.

Peter Dearnley and Di Slatter won both Multi-Sail races without having to turn out, while on the day John Saddington and Dennis Manning (Albacore) and John Ayres (Mirror) each enjoyed a victory. The afternoon Allcomers saw Ian Ayres clinch overall success with another win. This weekend the club starts its Frostbite series.

A fitful easterly deterred all but four Yeomans at Snowflakes, with some wind down the Street but tedious going up Swan Reach. Ian Hanson and Q Stewart ruled the roost for the first race, beating Pam Goodman and Richard Angier by a small margin after a delayed start, but the wind improved for the second race, won by Angier and Goodman when, on the final leg, they took an advantageous position to round the final mark ahead of Hanson and Stewart.
