Norwich City captain Sebastien Bassong has signed a new contract with the club, adding an extra year to his current contract.

The new deal ties the former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle centre-back to City until the summer of 2016. He signed for City for an undisclosed fee from Spurs in August 2012 and signed a three-year deal.

“I’m really pleased it is something I have been looking forward to doing, as being team captain I think it is something really important to commit myself even more to the club,” the 27-year-old, told the club’s official website.

“I had a little bad time with my fitness, as people know I missed pre-season and I had a knee injury and an operation, so I needed time to get back to my best and while I wasn’t playing I was working hard on my fitness, so now I feel better and am back on track.”

The Cameroon international was a key part of the Canaries team which finished 11th in the Premier League last season and was voted as player of the season by the club’s supporters.

City boss Chris Hughton added: “We’re delighted that we’ve had the opportunity to extend Seb’s contract – somebody who has been an integral part of everything we’ve done so far and of course our player of the season last year.”

  • To be fair to Seb , he has struggled with the weight of expectation on his shoulders . Last season we all looked to him to carry the rest of the defence , as he was head & shoulders above the others . He has a unique ability to make his fellow centre half play better , sort of a calming influence . When paired with Bennett both play better , I have my doubts about Turner but even he ups his game when alongside Seb . Well earned extension .

  • Agree with Powers this is a great bit of business. Another centre back with real quality would be on my wish list for the Jan window, bit of competition wouldnt hurt :-)

  • Great piece of business CH and the Norwich board! If we're serious about staying in this league then we need to tie down big characters and premier players. This is a very positive step.

  • Excellent extended signing. He was great last season + will come good again. Powerful in the air @ set pieces too. We certainly can't rely on the Netherlands' nancy to offer any threat from free kicks + Hooper is vertically challenged.

  • I think it is fair to say that like a few others, he hasn't hit the form of last season yet. However, he was excellent last year and things like injuries can take a toll on your confidence and I think that is what has happened to Bassong. We do need him to get back to his best because last year he was not only excellent himself, but he got his defensive partner playing better beside him.

  • Does this mean that he will actually start to earn his money ? So far he has been shortchanging his employers.

  • Seb and the rest of the defence certainly earned their corn last weekend that is for sure. He is an excellent centre back and surely we can forgive the odd blip now and again, few if any are perfect that is for sure. Even Suarez had an off day against Hull.

  • That's a very astute point Stew. However, when considering it, I think it's important to make sure it's in context, as without the TRA-LA-LA-LA-LAAAA-LA-LAA-LAA-LA, it could be a bit misleading!

  • NCFC boy, I'm afraid, looking at other posts he has made he doesn't watch the games. It looks as if I have fed a troll, sorry. If he wasn't he would have been a bit more specific (and grammatical!) I personally won't be responding to any more of his nonsense.
