Michael Turner earned the point Norwich City’s endeavour more than deserved off their old boss Paul Lambert with a 1-1 draw at 10-man Aston Villa.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

All eyes were on Paul Lambert’s arrival and his reception from the visiting fans before kick-off – and in the end the impressive City following opted to ignore the Villa boss entirely, and sing only for their current charges.

And the attitude seemed to work as City enjoyed the better of a fairly awful opening half, only to find themselves a goal behind at the break.

Wes Hoolahan had City’s best chance, put through by Grant Holt but seeing his finish strike the toes of goalkeeper Brad Guzan before drifting wide.

The Canaries will also feel they should have had a penalty as Villa captain Ron Vlaar shoved Elliott Bennett on the edge of the box, but referee Phil Dowd ignored all appeals.

And City were made to pay for that – and an all to regularly poor final ball – on 27 minutes.

Michael Turner and Sebastien Bassong got in a muddle to leave Christian Benteke unmarked in the area, and the Belgian international coolly slotted inside John Ruddy’s far post from Brett Holman’s cross.

While Villa started the second half brighter, it was City whose hopes took a significant turn for the better on 52 minutes as a soft booking for Joe Bennett earned him a second of the 90 and an early bath.

From there, City’s onslaught began. Chance after chance, change after change. But at the very moment it looked like it might not be Chris Hughton’s day, one of his summer signings arrived to draw the visitors level with 11 minutes left.

Guzan pulled of his second superb save of the match as Holt bore down on goal, but from the resulting short corner from substitute Robert Snodgrass, Hoolahan made time and space before his cross was deftly flicked in off the far post by the centre-back Turner.

City had all the territory and a few chances after that, but could not provide the ultimate irony for Lambert with a late winner as both sides left with a point.

• Aston Villa (4-3-1-2): Guzan; Herd, Lowton, Vlaar, J Bennett; Albrighton, El Ahmadi, Delph, Holman (Weimann, 76); Benteke (Bent, 70), Agbonlahor (Lichaj, 54). Unused subs: Given, Westwood, Bannan, Ireland.

• Norwich City (4-2-3-1): Ruddy; R Martin (R Bennett, 46), Turner, Bassong, Garrido; Tettey, Johnson (Morison, 70); E Bennett (Snodgrass, 64), Hoolahan, Pilkington; Holt. Unused subs: Rudd, Barnett, Howson, Jackson.

• Goals: Villa: Benteke (27). City: Turner (79)

• Bookings: Villa: Bennett (29), Herd (63)

• Sent off: Villa: Bennett (52)

• Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire)

  • Hello again Crab!! My original reply to MonkeyNuts has, belatedly, appeared. The truth is, I have lost trust in the competence and integrity of how these message boards are `managed`. I wonder how much of the over-the-top rhetoric is caused by this? I`d rather believe it was incompetence than malice. I`d rather. Our Norwich-dwelling Villa fan has tried to build bridges, sometimes to no avail. We need more wise old sages like you on board, Crab, ol` pal. I don't blame him at all for continually complaining about it - unless he does so, he, and all the rest of us, have to put up with our carefully thought-out posts disappearing without ever having seen the light of day - such a waste of the time taken to type them, and very frustrating. All the more so when inane rubbish from the self-styled "voice of the fans" (Ged) and other trolls (billiethebookie etc) is never censored in any way.

A neutral football fan watching this match would not have been enthralled by it. Norwich still had the chances to win comfortably, though. Team is still work in progress? In fairness to Monkey Nuts, his comments have been reasoned and courteous, so what`s wrong with him contributing to this board? Turner is looking better and his goal was welcome, but he still was nowhere near when Benteke scored. Then, he`s not the only CB is he? Lambo has a lot of hard work to do, but nobody does it better (with a bit of help from Culverhouse). OTBC.

  • Have to say this was a really painful game to watch. The quality of both teams was really poor. NCFC should have taken their chances and won with ease. It was hard to imagine at times these people are professional footballers with the passes that never found their target, corners that went from one side right out the other and general lack of ability. Pilkington had a really bad game, would not take on the full back and seemed really out of sorts. An away point is always a bonus but still dropping points in games we should be winning - still a real lack of a cutting edge to the team - hope we can hang on till January and sort that one out.

The first, we are beginning to play in the way we have become familiar with; that fighting to the end spirit Lambert instilled into the players. Secondy, this was bound to be a very emotional day for many of the guys; they handled it extremely well and came away with a very creditable result. Now that this "grudge" match is over, City can finally look forward with a lot more confidence and build on the platform CH is putting into place. I believe we will keep improving and come the end of the season still be in the PL. OTBC!!

  • Both teams will need to do better than this to be sure of surviving in the Premier League. I am glad that Turner is starting to find some form after a very wobbly start. Hughton seems to be steadying the ship but the wasted dead-balls and lack of finishing certainly cost us in this game along with some spectacular last-ditch goal keeping from Guzman. I am surprised that Lambo has not had more success this season, his turn-around of Norwich was incredible and on paper he seemed to be the right choice for Villa. He lost his way quite a bit in the second half of last season but at the time I put that down to him being distracted by his next move. I am looking forward to building from here; another run of bad form will be difficult to shake off.

I'm disappointed that we didn't bury Villa on a day when we were so much better than them in every department, but encouraged by the determination not to lose. Ironically, it was reminiscent of the last three seasons: Although I had an interesting discussion on the way home that in previous seasons the other Bennett would have replaced Martin at half time and another attacker brought on. Less safe, but more chance of a win. We need a few wins now that we've proved we can draw comfortably.

  • Come on Monks, don't be silly. Norwich were clearly the better side today. Even at 11 v 11 we passed the ball better and looked more likely to create openings. Villa (the home side) had 1 chance in the whole game and this was gifted to you by poor defending. City, without being brilliant, created 6 or 7 chances (I can list them if you insist) to score. Yes, it's our fault we didn't take them, along with a good goalkeeping performance and some excellent last-ditch defending, but the fact (and I know you love the facts!!) remains that we wasted chances whereas you didn't. A draw was poor for Villa (even though they deserved less), and poor for City (on reflection, even though we'd have taken this before the game) but the reality is that City deseerved the win on the balance of attacking play and chances created

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, and to be honest I'd rather read your posts (which seem reasonably balanced) that the drivel offered up by Mad Brewer. I'm 100% sure Lambert will keep Villa up but realistically, what more can he achieve? What do teams like City and the current Villa side have to aim for? The top teams are so far ahead financially that the best any of us can hope for is a Europa League tour . Villa probably have the potential to go further, but it's sad that the best the majority can hope for is mid-table Premier League - and £50 to see City play Stoke and Sunderland!!

We had similar stats against Arsenal last week with Arsenal having the lions share however posession in your own half counts for nothing and that is where most of Arsenal's posession was and yours was today. In both of those games the posession in the final third was all ours which is why we dominated both games.

I was at the game, i had a view of how poor we were (this performance was on par with the O'Leary days), i am under no illusions of this and i can say that this year i CAN see us relegated. I hate to admit it but its true. Mark - i only offered the stats to prove that possession wise you did not dominate. As mentioned before we struggled to cope with you today but i will praise Brad for an immense display between the posts. We had 4 centre backs missing for todays match and the experience showed. We played a midfielder at the back and the total combined appearances of these 4 is 46. Thats the inexperience we have got and what PL has to contend with.

Put simply, we'd be in League 1 (or worse) if it wasn't for him, and I'd have missed out on 3 of the best years of my life if he hadn't been at City. I am confident most fans would like to see teams like Villa relegated as not only are they terrible, but it's healthy to see a (traditionally) big (?!!) club relegated every now and again. Would be boring if the same old teams were in the top flight year after year. Hence the rason so many dislike Coventry and Southanpton I'd imagine. Anyway, very frustrating today, defo 2 points dropped (again), but still encouraging signs

Surely that must mean they have to be given credit for some stearn defending? How about praising Guzman? Or shall we talk about Holt who managed to hit the corner flag? You have come away from a poor team with a point. Understandably you are annoyed at this, but fingers needed to be pointed at your players inability to finish teams off. You played some good stuff, kept the ball well, but make no mistake we made you look good today. Dark Moon - i reiterate my stance - a team with 10 vs 11 who comes away with a point deserve that point. You seem to be over critical of another fans point of view? I havent once criticised you, i base my opinions on the facts, and those facts are we are 17th and you are 16th, making us the 4th and 5th worse teams in the top division. You can mock my opinion but you cannot deny the facts. Stephen Davis - why do you claim most fans want us to go down? What facts do you have to prove this? Is it still the Lambert thing that irks you? For the record i dont think he's the man for us. He isnt proven at this level but its early doors and i hope he proves me wrong. Benteke is a handful when the ball is lumped up, but he's a donkey really. The only chance they had was the one we (Turner) gifted them. No other Villa player caused us problems. We clearly deserved to win the game but didn't take our chances. We'd have taken a point before the game but on reflection, clearly 2 dropped. Some of the finishing was rubbish. But very frustrating considering how terrible Villa are. I think most people in the country are hoping they go down. Still, might turn out to be a decent point. 1p5wich got beat heavily yet again!!! For you to suggest that Villa deserved a draw is as bizarre as suggesting that City should have come away with something from the 5-0 defeat to Fulham. That would be an opinion - but, like yours, not worth paying attention to. You survived through extraordinary good fortune, inspired goalkeeping and poor finishing. And that was without Norwich playing at anything like their best! Villa (even before the sending off) were the worst team I have seen the Canaries play since they returned to the Premiership. One of your fans just phoned Radio 5 to say that he felt Villa were doomed and that Lambert was not the man for the job. I think they might well be but that it would not necessarily be Lambert's fault - it's just that you only have about three decent players! • Disapointed not to get 3 points from that. Villa were awful. Our final ball needs to improve and the score would have been more like 3-1. Turner redeemed himself, with the equaliser. We totally dominated most of the game, but couldn't finish them off. The signs for city are encouraging, but we need to sharpen up and start winning these games. It was there for the taking.

  • Was always going to be a bit of a strange one for the players. Must have been odd to see PL bouncing up and down in the other dug out. However, any point away from home is a good one though we need to get the set pieces right especially with Stoke coming up. No reason why we can't pick up 6 points from the next 2 games.OTBC!

  • 2 points dropped, £albert must be celebrating. We must start beating the minnows.

  • Your entitled to your opinion and so am i downunder. All that VB must have gone to your head. How you can say you deserved to win is beyond me. We had ten men and defended well, A drew was always on the cards. Both teams very poor, never ever going to set the world alight this one.

  • You are nuts, Monkey if you think that was a fair result. Never before have I seen a Norwich side so dominant away from home. A 4-1 scoreline would not have flatted us. Villa were terrible. Our final ball was often poor, but a lot of the football was very good. Certainly deserved to win.

  • Encouraging performance by City, Villa were woeful can only remember the one serious attack. We really should have finished them off though, last ball not good enough too many times, lots of shots off target and a blinding performance by the villa keeper (who must have been their Man of the Match ) didn't help. Not great then but a definite further step in the right direction.

  • Poor Game between 2 very poor teams. Fair result but have to wonder how much effect the sending off had, we'll never know. Not the kick in the shorts Swisscanary wanted to give us but hey, its a long season, both will continue to struggle but hopefully both will be here next season.
