Archery, climbing, abseiling, high ropes and a First World War centenary presentation will be on the agenda for Eaton Vale Activity Centre’s open day this weekend.
For just £10, visitors can turn their hands to two activities out in the sunshine at the Church Lane facility.
Darren Glanville, Activities Manager, said: “The whole idea is that members of the pubic are able to come down to the centre and experience activities in an open session.”
As well as physical exercise, a presentation from a living history specialist will offer guests a chance to broaden their minds on life during the First World War.
Following a string of popular shows in the past, Norfolk-based Richard Knight will return to the Eaton Vale centre to tell the story of British soldiers in Khaki on Campaign.
He said: “I tell stories and give insights in to the life of a soldier from when he had enlisted, through the hard times, right through the First World War - how he slept, how he gets his food and washes.”
Mr Knight, from Marsham, was inspired to do presentations by his grandfather, who fought in the Great War until he was gassed in 1917.
He now tours schools and museums, holds the role of outreach officer for Imperial War Museum Duxford and even appears on TV shows like Downton Abbey and War Horse through his role as a specialist military extra.
Using artefacts from his personal collection, uniforms, equipment and weaponry to ensure audiences get a true taste of the experience is proving popular with schools.
“They are really taking up on this and several ones have me go back year after year. Getting them dressed up makes them feel as though they are part of that period,” he said.
The Activity Centre open day will run from 10am until 4pm. Tickets are available in advance on 01603 501228 and groups of four or more will receive a 15% discount.
Tickets for Khaki on Campaign are £2.50 for under 16s in advance, £3.50 for adults and £1 more on the door. Shows run at 11am and 2:30pm. Contact 01263 731318 or 07910858767.
