Andrew Surman has got his mojo back and is determined to show Norwich City fans what they have been missing.

The midfielder opened the scoring in Tuesday’s 6-1 friendly romp at Braintree and was also impressive in the Dereham curtain-raiser following his return from a season-long loan stint at Bournemouth.

The 27-year-old was frozen out at Carrow Road under previous boss Chris Hughton after struggling with a knee injury but Surman’s 29-game spell at the Cherries underlined he can operate in the Championship.

“I had a bad injury, missed the whole season through it really and going to Bournemouth just allowed me to find that touch, that missing yard back and probably gave me back my belief as well to feel I’ve got my career on track,” said Surman, who is entering the final year of his current Norwich deal.

“It’s nice to feel wanted but I am not sure exactly what is going to happen at this moment in time. I’m trying to get the most I can out of the games and we will see what happens in the future. I really enjoyed it at Bournemouth but it is nice to be back and everyone is playing for a place here.”

Surman insists City’s squad is firmly buying into Neil Adams’ Championship promotion bid.

“We have more than enough in this dressing room to be in the Premier League. That is the main aim and that is the attitude we are taking into games,” he said. “We have some decent players and good characters in the dressing room. When you first come back in everyone is on a downer after the relegation but the manager has had a few meetings and made it clear that is in the past and that has gone now.

“Things can change so quickly in football. It was disappointing last season with what happened and the manager leaving but everyone is behind Neil. He has put his stamp on things and we all know what he wants.”

Surman has started both friendly wins on the left of a midfield diamond.

He added: “I’ve played the diamond before when we got promoted and playing with Jonno (Bradley Johnson) sitting and Wes (Hoolahan) and Jonny Howson in there I thought we linked quite well (at Braintree). It’s easy to play that role when you have done it before and I have enjoyed the first two games. It proves we have a lot of good players.”

  • Perhaps those childish mascot outfits are just to disguise surplus half-time silly forkers, and give them something even more pointless to do?

  • I really hope we start the season without any further departures and just the addition of a right back unless Elliott Bennett can make this his own. By Christmas we should know better who we need and don't need so we can sell the surplus players for a higher fee in the January window to one of the lower placed Premier teams who are in a state of panic. The players will also benefit from better contracts due to the relegation panic. Of course Norwich City don't suffer from relegation panic. We just sit, do nothing and wait for it, don't we?

  • Like your commitment Splat. Maybe we could build up your role. How about American style wrestling at half time, you've got the right name for leaping off the top rope onto opposition supporters. Not sure what that fat canary or the mattress could do, tag team perhaps.

  • I am off to Addis again tomorrow Brew to check on how the malolactic fermentation is coming along. Like a good vintner, NA should be choosing what he wants to keep and what he is willing to let go of. Then he should talk to Master Sommelier McNasty and tell him to start 'printing the labels'. No sense in spoiling the next vintage with few sour grapes.

  • I'm going nowhere cutty. Like everyone else at the club I intend to knuckle down and get this club back to where they belong. I mean where we belong. Obviously if a major sporting event comes along and they see a role for a man sized blue and yellow cat then I would have to talk to the club about such an opportunity. I'm only interested in one thing, however, and that is this club so all this talk of the Commonwealth Games means nothing to me. Although I'm flattered of course and I've always loved athletics but I'm focused on getting your club back to the Premier League.... I mean my club.

  • You`ve opened up the Eritrean Hagar Nish Plateau parsnip wine a bit early, Dubya. Is it fully matured? Poor old Neil has SFA say in matters relating to money or contracts. He could show them who`s `Boss`, but it wouldn`t be him. `Bossy` football coaches are seen as impatient; a nuisance. Ask Hyacinth.

  • Sorting this transfer speculation should be simple. A) If the manager wants to keep the players he has, then he gets to keeps them. This should be clearly spelled out between club manager and player. B) If a player is going to be 'special' about this and decides he wants out and is going to be selfish then, get him to put in a transfer request. If a transfer request is received then the player should have his options spelled out. If he wants to break his contract, then it is going to cost him AND the club who may be coming in for him. C) Once a player has decided that he wants to go, then he should be kept away from the squad. Put him in the shop window, actively seek a tactical replacement, and if no one comes through with the asking price before the transfer window closes, send him out on loan or stick him in the development squad. If one of the managers choice players 'wanted out' I wouldn't want to see him again and I'd keep him well away from the rest of the squad. Come on Neil, it's time to show them who is boss !!

  • Matt you're putting a great deal of thought into the future line up and I can't fault your reasoning. So what are your views on Captain Canary, Splat the Cat and Mattress Man, I think it's time we replace this dated trio with an upbeat eye catching theme. My idea I fear would be too sexist.

  • There is little doubt that Surman is a good quality Championship player but then again so is sick note, I mean Pilks, keeping both happy is the real test of any good manager but at least NA seems prepared to give the diamond formation a go, at least in preseason friendlies. It will be interesting to how we set up for the opening game and how quickly we switch to plan B if things are not going our way. I still think playing three at the back together with wing backs is another option and Bennett and Surman could easily be employed in that set up that is for sure.

  • Saw Surman playing for Bournemouth and he looked good, keeping his head up and looking to give an intelligent pass, unlucky with his injury which he has recovered well from. Plenty good enough for the Chumpionship. Others I would rather see go for instance a certain player who spends most of his time injured and when he plays makes about two efforts a game and just cruises the rest of the time.

  • Hi, Mr. Forkker. I`ve often wonder what it is that posse of prodders sets out to achieve in that 15 minute cameo. Mashing molehills? Wasting wormcasts? Gathering gum? Downsizing Divots? I can see, from what you say, that the rewards are great, but have you been subjected to Chancellor Machianalli`s austerity measures yet? Are there Hard Tines ahead, after all those Great Expectations? That`s a great bit of predictive writing, Mattias ;-) You`d be a great novelist, honest you would. Veritably D!ckensian. Agree with mardler - give Andrew a 2-year contract extension. I think he`ll repay the faith. If not, he`ll be off to join Eddie Howe. But he has plenty of time before he needs to find a retirement billet on the South Coast. Being a footy player, he probably already has one or two already. Keep him here a bit longer, Neil!

  • If Adams bring a new midfielder in, I recon Fer is gone.. But he cannot afford letting Fer go without having a replacement in the squad- then we'll have too little cover for a thin midfield... two injuries and we're out!

  • Agree MB. I actually had that very MF diamond combo in one of my line ups I noted down. Still cant decide on a system or a starting 11 though. I've kind of eliminated Fer from my line ups as however much I like him and dream of him destroying the championship, I get the feeling he will be sold. Thing is, I get the feeling it will be on deadline day we sell either Fer or Redmond. Technically we DONT need to sell, but of course everyone has a price. We've heard both those statements many times recently. We can just sit back and see how far others will go to get them. Its not like will go under if we dont sell Fer. It would be a different story then. I get the feeling Fer will rock back up after his 3 week holiday due to world cup involvement. The club will use the line "hes a little behind on pre-season" to explain his name missing from some line ups. He will then make 1 or 2 appearances in the championship before deadline day arrives and a PL club panics after missing out on someone else and offers stupid money at the last minute and hes sold. Thats my prediction anyway.

  • PPS. I think Brad, Surs, Howson & Wes would make a good midfield "diamond" in The Champ, especially if somebody could teach Johnners to pass... A(d)dams has the option of winger(s) too. I cannot see Tettey & Fer being happy with `squad` status. I admit to being surprised that Andrew hasn`t gone to Bournemouth. Perhaps they are waiting patiently for a Freebie at the end of this season? The Carra Charity Shop; The Norwich Way.

  • One minute hes doing interviews hinting that he'd like to stay at Bournemouth and the next hes doing interviews claiming Bournemouth was nice to help him return from injury. I like it Surs ;) in fairness I hope he gets a fair crack at it this season as at this level hes technically very gifted. Just needs to be played where he is strongest. For me that isnt central midfield. Leave that to a combo of Tettey, Johnson, Howson or Fer. Depending on what formation we play he was extremely good for Saints on the left side of midfield. Lovely left foot to even the balance up with all these right footed wingers (Murphy, Redmond, Bennett etc). He can also play at Left wing back very well should Adams go down that route. Currently I cannot decide on a starting 11. I really cant. For me I'd have Ruddy, Olsson, Martin, Turner & Bennett at the back (depending if we sign anyone else)....from that point on though there is about 12 players all perfectly capable of deserving a starting spot in those spare 6 places. Going to be a lot of people who dont even make the bench this season. All depends what shape Neil wants to play and who his favourites are.
