Alex Tettey admits Norwich City’s squad should not be embroiled in a Premier League relegation scrap.

The Norwegian international insists the Canaries have better players than this time 12 months ago when they survived in the final week prior to embarking on a record close-season transfer outlay. Dutch internationals Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Leroy Fer moved to Carrow Road alongside the likes of Nathan Redmond and Martin Olsson but City still find themselves in another survival struggle.

Norwich host Sunderland this weekend four points clear of the bottom three and bidding to bounce back from two heavy away defeats at Aston Villa and Southampton.

“I agree we probably did not expect to be in this situation. Last season we had guys who if you compared them to the ones who came in are not what you would describe as high profile players,” he said. “I think we should do better this season if you compare the squad we have now. What can you say? You have to be realistic. As a group and a team we know what is going on. We know where we are. We have to look forward and not dwell on what happened in the past. That is gone. “We can’t do anything about it and what we don’t need is any negativity around us because as soon as we have that we will not think positively.”

Tettey is fully aware Norwich’s fans expected better this season.

“I understand but it is us who are playing the game and we want the people of Norfolk to be happy. We are trying to perform at our maximum,” he said. “That is football. We have to perform better than last Saturday.

“Of course we feel the frustration on the pitch with the fans; especially at Villa after those first 25 minutes. As a player you are concentrating on the pitch of course, but you hear it all.”

  • Well sort your act out then Tettey because you are not doing it on the pitch like the other 10!

  • Let's be fair to Alex Tetty. He said that the players that we had, which included him, were not as "high profile" as the ones that came in. I think that is true, Fer, RvW, Hooper and even young Mr Remond were pretty well known to the media. Overall, I think he is a good asset to the team and does a lot to help us defensively. If he has a bad game, we tend to ship more. He fell over and gifted Soton their 4th goal. That was bad but sh1t happens, though it seems to be happening to us more than it should at the moment. As we are all aware, everything is now in a muggers buddle and I believe that if we do not win on Saturday, it is good night Vienna.

  • Thanks el dingo. So good you told me twice! I agree it's been difficult to post positively on here this season. In fact today has probably been the most positive I've been all season (not saying much is it)! I think it's a reaction to the level of negativity on here. I just feel a natural need to try and offset some of it somehow. Not entirely sure why, since I tend to agree with a lot of the points being made! I just hope it doesn't descend into anarchy too early tomorrow. If we can at least give them the first half to get a grip of the game then that will at least give us a chance.

  • Hells' bells, Gek. I had to lie down after fighting my way through your torturous alliteration. God knows how you must have felt after creating it. Not surprising you have to turn in early. I'm fine with a midday plastering (assuming Fagen is similarly inclined). If you miss the last bus back to the hinterland, we'll have a whip round for a taxi.

  • Baguio You couldn't be wider of the mark re tettey. When he plays he makes a difference, he knows his limitations and plays to his strengths. What's failed him is not having a playmaker or someone creative next to him. As for not being first choice, when he's fit, he plays. The squad is better this year, but we haven't played to the strengths of the new additions, we have gone backwards.

  • So its the negativity that causes losses? Really???, how about the villa game, winning + crowd not negative but somehow Chris 'The Ostrich' Hughton managed to lose that one heavily.

  • Danny Tanti, I think you`ve hit the nail on the head there. Tettey was an all-action grafter when he first came to us. Bradley Johnson nicknamed him the `Duracell Bunny`, and clearly enjoyed playing alongside him. But he`s no playmaker either! We have only one of that type - Wes Hoolahan. Like many other players, Tettey has gone backwards too. The manager has abjectly failed to meld a team from the resources he has. Btw, I suppose Fox comes under that `playmaker` label in a different sort of way, but he`s well out of the picture now. (Was there a split infinitive in there anywhere? I`ve never understood those).

  • And you are one of the main reasons Tettey. Every time your name appears on the team sheet we know that the first choice player must be injured. You have been dreadful young man! No where near premiership quality at all.

  • These players come to the club with a decent name, they obviously have quality to be good enough for the premiership. So why does CH not trust them to play their game. Obviously his game plans haven't worked this season & not great last season. I hate to say it but under PL these players would have been allowed to express themselves!

  • Kept getting the `White Screen` treatment, Blaffen. I`ve never laid a multi-yolked post like that before. I think I`ll stop worrying about split infinitives. More worried about my split ends now. The answer is clear - the onset of trichotillomania, as suffered by the sedentary shoal of several shinies sitting still in the standing situation seminar. Ripping good idea, what? Apologies for going off-topic. Archie doesn`t approve of on-topic stuff.

  • Let's be fair here. I don't think Tettey has said much wrong here has he? And I also think he has had some good performances this season and does a job. I could just be falling victim to the NCFC-Archant propaganda here, but I think he's right that we need to try and avoid the negativity on Saturday and get fully behind the lads (as I'm sure the majority on here will do as always anyway), because we can't afford to have their heads drop early doors. If you need to vent the frustration, try and save it to the end of the match.

  • Is Hughton or someone within the club trotting the players out one by one to tell us what we have known for months. The players are reflecting what I see at home matches most times, the passion of the manager who stands with his hands in his pockets giving the odd whistle here and there. He should be shouting his Fing head of to get the players to pull their fingers out.

  • Morning, Gek. Hope you're feeling a little better. You're clearly still pining for Mattias. Don't worry, he's just nipped over to the Caymans to bank his tardis takings and work on his tan line. Back next week. Meanwhile you do a passable impersonation of him with your increasingly long posts. However, unlike Matt, your dissertations reach their target word count by writing 5 lines, then cut 'n pasting the same 5 lines, then repeating the process. There are 3 possible explanations for this: (1) you took an overdose of Panegyrics yesterday; (2) Archie is "triple-printing" your posts to make up for years of ethering; or (3) you really ARE desperate for an explanation of the split infinitive (again). Here goes: Hughton has failed to effectively manage the team = wrong? Hughton has failed effectively to manage the team = right. Hughton has failed = better. Btw, you didn't use a split infinitive in your post, so this lecture is as pointless as Alex Tettey's egesta above.
