There was a tense ending to the latest World Endurance Championship LMP2 race, with former Formula One racer Will Stevens snatching victory away from Bruno Senna with five minutes remaining.

Stevens joined Alex Brundle and Roman Rusinov in the G-Drive entry for the Fuji Six Hours and the squad once more claimed pole position for the race after the King’s Lynn racer had led the way in the free practice sessions.

Stevens took the first stint and led the early laps, with Rusinov keeping up the good work before handing over to the local racer.

Brundle resumed in second place, just three seconds off the lead, but having completed one more stop, when the pit stop sequence unravelled found himself with a handy 31-second advantage.

However, as the final pit stops played out, Stevens found himself behind Senna – but quickly nipped past with 30 minutes remaining. However, the passing manoeuvre was adjudged to have taken place using part of the pit lane exit and he was asked to relinquish the position.

Senna proved more difficult to pass a second time, but relentless pressure paid off as Stevens slipped past once more, going into the first corner, in the final minutes of the race for the squad’s first victory of the season.

“This was a great team victory and I am so happy for them as they have been denied cruelly a few times this year.

“It is so well deserved,” said a jubilant Brundle.
