David Wagner is happy for Norwich City to continue going under the radar in their pursuit of Premier League promotion via the play-offs.

The Canaries can secure a top-six spot today, providing they beat Swansea this afternoon and Hull fail to beat Ipswich Town.

Despite both Norwich and West Brom being chased down by nearest challengers Hull, Wagner feels very few are backing his side to finish the job and book a top-flight return.

That suits him and this group just fine given how they have had to overcome adversity to transform a campaign that looked to be heading into dangerous water last autumn. Wagner is happy with the position his side find themselves in as crunch time approaches.

“It is an interesting situation", Wagner said. “I really like our position - nobody is really speaking about us.

“Everyone is speaking about catching us or even West Brom, but nobody speaks about us [for promotion]. It’s all good.

“Let’s do our job. I say this often: speak less, work more. I like the position which we are in and I really love that we know what we have to do to get the first target done.

“You can smell it, especially today in training after [Wednesday's result with Hull and Coventry]. Everyone knows now exactly – one step, and we have done something which would be extraordinary.”

There has been much debate about whether a fifth-placed finish would give City any advantage heading into the top six.

As it stands, that would pit City against former play-off-winning captain Russell Martin and his Southampton side, one that has failed to seize the opportunity amid a chaotic few weeks between automatic promotion-chasing Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich.

Wagner was unwilling to engage in the debate at Thursday's press conference as he focuses on finishing the job this weekend. What comes next will be discussed thereafter.

"For me, at the end of the day, the aim is to win football matches. We have two left, and we are only focused on the next one - this is only what counts for me," City's head coach said.

"What the outcome is [as we sit here] today, is totally irrelevant. It's about Saturday and only about Saturday. Nothing more."
