A decision over plans for 24 homes in Blofield Heath has been deferred to allow for more information and consultation about a proposed access road.

Villagers have voiced serious concerns about the safety of siting a housing estate’s access road next to the entrance to Heathlands Community Centre and Socal Club in Woodbastwick Road.

The proposed development, by Jenkinson Properties, was previously refused and at a meeting in March a decision was taken to commission an independent highway assessment, to look at access issues which could affect the club and nearby homes.

The subsequent report was considered by Broadland District Council’s planning committee yesterday, but councillors were unable to reach an agreement on whether the outline plans should be approved or not and so the decision has been deferred.

Architect Terry Norton, acting on behalf of the Heathlands Community Centre and Social Club, said he felt there were still issues to be resolved over whether the developer would be able to provide adequate visibility for an access road.

He said: “They are proposing a new road access directly by the side of Heathlands that’s not compliant with any legislation in any manual or design guide and there’s absolutely a risk. At Heathlands we have all ages, from pushchairs to wheelchairs, and if you put in another access for an estate road it’s unquestionably going to be more dangerous than it is.”

Another proposal, for amended plans for 14 homes on land east of Plantation Road, Blofield, was approved by the committee and will in due course be formally approved by the council’s planning officers.
