People are being urged to have their say on plans which could more than double the size of a village outside Norwich.

A total of 900 homes are proposed in Easton in the next 10 to 15 years, along with a new village hall, expanded primary school, play area and green
spaces.

People living in the area will get their first chance to inspect the development plans at two exhibitions in the village next weekend, and have their say on the fine detail before a planning application is made this summer.

The development is being put forward by a consortium of local landowners including Easton and Otley College, the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association, the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance and the Rampton Property Trust.

Easton parish council clerk John Witcombe said councillors were concerned at the number of houses in the village, but encouraged villagers to make their voices heard so they could be considered in the final plans.

“People must speak up now so that they can have their say,” he said.

“I don’t think we are that keen on the number of new homes that are coming – it’s an enormous number – but it’s the planners who have decided the number. We have 600 homes in the village at the moment, and there are another 900 coming.”

Easton has been identified by South Norfolk Council as a major growth area under its Local Plan document which follows the Joint Core Strategy outlining 37,000 homes for Great Norwich.

Mr Witcombe said the council had been working with the developers to influence the plans, and ensure the village benefited as much as possible from the changes.

The area is set to see other changes, with the 435-home phase two of Lodge Farm in Costessey approved earlier this week and a new supermarket £6m Next superstore set for Longwater.

Mr Witcombe added: “It has reached the point where it is now going to happen, so we have been making sure our views are heard.”

The developers say they are aiming to create a sustainable community and fashion a new heart for the village.

The exhibition will be a chance to inspect the masterplan, which shows the layout and landscaping of the the development, with villagers’ feedback on house distribution, transport infrastructure and community facilities being included in the finer detail plans which could be submitted to South Norfolk Council by the summer. If the application is made then, a decision could follow by the end of the year.

Members of the project team will be on hand to answer questions about the development.

The exhibitions will be between 2pm and 8pm on Friday and 9am and 2pm on Saturday.
