Organisers of the Breckland Book Festival held a poetry competition as part of the month-long event.

Entrants were asked to write a poem about the district.

Winners of the competition were presented with their prizes at Watton Library on Saturday.

Kieran Loades, from Scarning, won the younger age category with his poem which celebrates Breckland as a “great place to live”. His poem showcases the district’s offerings with references to tractors and combines ploughing fields and soldiers from Swanton Morley marching through Dereham.

The nine-year-old, who goes to Dereham St Nicholas Junior School, received a £30 book token for his winning entry.

He said: “I was really pleased and amazing I won the competition.”

Kieran’s mum Sarah-Jane Loades added: “We are very proud of him.”

Other winners were Ashley Ford, who won the over 18s category, and Emily Gibson, 12, who goes to Neatherd High School. Emily’s nonet, a nine-line poem, also referred to Breckland’s flat landscape and farmland.

The poems were judged by Andrea Holland who presented the prizes during her talk and poetry reading at Watton Library.
