Wymondham archer Kenny Allen has broken the Paralympic Games’ record with 651 points – 13 more than the previous games record.

The 42-year-old, who has spina bifida occulta, competed in the individual standing recurve and made a strong start in his bid to win a medal at the Paralympic Games.

The married father-of-two took up the sport six years ago and, despite never winning an individual medal at world or European level, was eight points off taking the world record.

Mr Allen, who came sixth in the world championships last year and is competing at the Paralympic Games for the first time, said he took up archery when he was looking for a new sport to try.

“I know it’s only the ranking round but to shoot a PB is great and to end up in number one is not too bad either,” he said. “I’m having a ball, it’s all great fun and I’m simply enjoying it.”

Mr Allen said he had always enjoyed accuracy sports such as darts, pool and fishing, soon discovering he was a natural archer.

Now he said he is hoping to be on target to finish in at least the top 10.
