Shovels, garden forks, saws, hammers, chisels, sewing machines and even typewriters were left at a south Norfolk church over the weekend in its bid to support those in poorer countries.
Instead of the usual food collections often donated at harvest festivals, this year Wymondham Baptist Church decided to ask the community for its unwanted gardening and DIY tools.
The tools will be sent to Ipswich-based charity Tools With A Mission where they will be repaired and shipped overseas to countries such as Uganda.
Officials at the church said they must have collected about a tonne in weight of tools over Saturday and Sunday which has encouraged them to look at repeating the event next year.
“We want to say a big thank you to everybody. It’s been so amazing and we have been so encouraged,” said church secretary Christine Spencer.
“Some people came with two or three things and some with a whole boot full of stuff. People were seeing that this is something really worthwhile and it stopped them from taking stuff to the tip.
“There were older people who had had stuff for many years and treasured it, but didn’t use it anymore. They said it was wonderful to think that others could use it.”
Anyone still wishing to donate their unwanted tools is welcome to call the church office for more information on 01953 607938.
