Work is set to start on the A47 Postwick junction at the end of this month, after the Department for Transport today released the £19m needed for the project.

The scheme, which is crucial to the Norwich Northern Distributor Road, is known as the Postwick Hub and is set to bring homes and businesses to the area east of the city.

Norfolk County Council said preliminary stages of the scheme, including archeological digs, will start in a few weeks time, with main construction getting underway in May.

But the council did not have a specific timetable for road closures during the 18-month project.

Release of the money is also confirmation there has been no High Court challenge to the scheme, which was approved by the Government in January after a detailed examination of the project at a public inquiry in July last year.

David Harrison, Cabinet Member for Transport, welcomed the news the funding had been released.

“It has taken a long, long time to reach this point, but we can at last look forward to work starting on site,” he said. “Lack of capacity at this junction has been stifling nearby businesses and housing development for years.”

But campaigners against the junction and the Norwich Northern Distributor Road, which it will act as a gateway to, have said the work will signal “the start of the devastation”.

“We are concerned about work starting but the inconvenience people will have to put up with will carry on because the outcome is going to be so bad that people will be inconvenienced forever more,” said Denise Carlo from the Norwich and Norfolk Transport Action Group.

  • Have to agree with Mr. Norton, all the other roads are not fit for purpose. Anyway as I live in Dublin will this help with my commute? I think not.

  • Are we safe to assume the "once it is joined at both ends" and becomes the road it should be, all you anti's will refuse to use it? Fully agree that for it to work it has to be a full road, it will happen, it is good news, and will benefit in the end. Wait and see, Rome wasn't built in a day.

  • Terrible news. Yet more environmental destruction, no doubt much more unnecessary housing and an even bigger stink from the sewage works.

  • NCC keep saying the Postwick Hub and NDR will be good for business and even kick start the economy, with all the new development the roads will bring. However, there is major concern for existing businesses and the city center when all this "out of town" development comes to fruition. For example a new development has just been granted in one area (with a large chunk of money allocated to the NDR so I understand), for another supermarket, garage, restaurant, business units etc when there is already a garage, supermarket, restaurants and a number of vacant business units very close by. Also, the city already have a considerable amount of vacant business space. Perhaps that is why only a relatively small amount of local businesses support the NDR ?

  • When are the planning morons going to realise that the Northern Distributor Road MUST CONNECT to the A47 at both ends. No sane lorry driver will pass Honingham on the way to the Airport via Postwick!!!

  • It's utter madness to start building new roads whilst the majority of the others are literally falling to bits.
