Developers behind a scheme which will see 3,500 homes built to the north of Norwich have revealed the first people are set to move in within two years.
Broadland District Council gave the go-ahead last autumn for the Beyond Green development in Sprowston and Old Catton, with officers acknowledging the homes would change the face of the area forever.
Two new primary schools, a library, health centre, cafés, pubs, shops, a hotel and businesses also form part of the scheme which was granted outline planning permission by Broadland councillors.
It will see the transformation of more than 207 hectares of land to the north of Sprowston and Old Catton, between Wroxham Road and St Faiths Road.
The plans were put forward by Beyond Green, representing a group of five landowners, including Norfolk County Council and also include creating 82.5 hectares of green space, including a new public park on land at Beeston Hall.
Bosses at Beyond Green have revealed they are working on the detailed planning and design. They said work will start in the middle of next year, with people moving into the first homes by spring 2016.
The scheme has generated opposition, with Sprowston Town Council among those who raised concerns about the scale of the development and about flooding.
But Neil Murphy, from Beyond Green, said: “North Sprowston and Old Catton is intended to be a blueprint for a place that offers a high quality of life with a very small carbon footprint, combining proven features of places people like – such as proper streets, accessible local services and well-built adaptable homes – with the best of contemporary sustainable design.”
The project has been shortlisted for a Royal Town Planning Institute Planning Excellence Award, having been nominated by Beyond Green and Broadland District Council.
