Winners announced for Norwich Ice Rink charity skate session

Two organisations from Norfolk have been awarded a free charity ice skating session.

This year the ice rink will open on Friday, December 15 and run until Sunday 7 January, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. This year the ice rink will open on Friday, December 15 and run until Sunday 7 January, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Norfolk YMCA and Norfolk Family Carers have been announced as the winners of this year’s charity skate competition.

The competition, launched by the EDP and Evening News, ran throughout November and offered local organisations the chance to win 50 tickets to use or auction off to raise money.

Norfolk YMCA and Norfolk Family Carers were picked out of a multitude of applications, and will both be giving the tickets to the people they support.

Their skate session will take place at 6pm on Tuesday, December 19.

Norfolk YMCA work with disadvantaged young people and families who are at a point of crisis, including those affected by homelessness.

Susie Knights, Marketing and Fundraising Manager for Norfolk YMCA, said: “We are so delighted and very grateful to have been chosen to receive such an amazing gift.

“Many of the people we support struggle to find the resources to enjoy such a fantastic activity, so this will be a real treat and an enriching experience for them.”

Norfolk Family Carers provides specialist support to young people and young adults who look after a family member with; a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition, learning difficulty, substance misuse problem of life-limiting condition.

Staff were incredibly grateful the organisation had been selected.

Young People’s Services Manager, Catherine Bibb said the tickets would “ensure the incredible young people we care for have a break, and time to access support form their peers and support staff during a period that can be very socially isolating.”

She added: “For many young carers this will offer a brand new experience and the opportunity to build some positive memories.”

Sponsored by the Sleeping Beauty pantomime at Norwich Theatre Royal, the ice rink is due to open in Castle Mall Gardens on Friday, December 15.

It will run until January 7, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Opening hours will be from 10am to 9pm daily, with the last skate session starting at 8pm.
