It all started so promisingly.
You can't beat a good burger, but a good burger can sure beat you... Reporter Joe Wilkes is defeated by the burger challenge at Great Yarmouth's Grosvenor Casino. We had all seen the extreme eating challenges on irreverent and increasingly popular American show Man VS Food, and thought it looked easy.
But when it came to facing the Big Burger Challenge at Great Yarmouth’s Grosvenor Casino - one of five being held at the casino in Marine Parade, in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care - it was clear we were wrong.
The night of Saturday, September 15 saw myself and other Archant employees take part in a challenge to consume a whopping 3lb burger with chips, salad and corn on the cob at the casino, paying £15 for the privilege and the prospect of winning £100.
Contestant Callum Knott, 20, and friends - from Costessey - were confident before the challenge.
“You can’t beat a big old burger,” said Callum. “I feel like I could eat two.”
He started well, devouring the corn on the cob in one motion, but it was a different matter when it came to the behemoth burger.
Afterwards, amid scenes of near devastation, the defeated hopeful said: “It feels like I have overdosed on burger.
“I didn’t think it would be that hard, it was a lot of fun though and all for a good cause, I would definitely bring my friends to try it again.”
Callum was left with a quarter of the burger and some chips before admitting defeat.
The next challenge at the casino - called Belly Vs Food in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care - will be “Whale and Chips” tomorrow, at 7pm, featuring a 3lb fresh cod cooked in batter, with mushy peas,a mountain of chips and bread and butter.
On the 29th will be the American Combo, comprising a whole chicken, rack of ribs, foot long sausage, jacket potato, corn on the cob and onion rings, and on the October 6 the challenge will be “Football Meat Feast Pizza”, one huge pizza with meatballs and selection of meats with mountain of potato wedges and coleslaw.
Gulp!
