Following in his grandmother’s footsteps, Prince Edward will this week be the first member of the Royal Family in 60 years to attend both days of the Royal Norfolk Show.
The Earl of Wessex is this year’s Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association (RNAA) President – the 13th member of his family to take the role in the last 100 years.
His grandmother, The Queen Mother, was president 60 years ago when the show was first held at its current location in Costessey – and she is the only other member of the family to have attended the event on both days.
The Queen was show president in 1986 and she continues to be the association’s Royal patron.
The Duke of Edinburgh was show president in 1999 and Prince Charles in 2004. Prince Harry delighted the crowds during his visit in 2008 and The Princess Royal was president in 1990 and also attended in 2011.
This will be the first time Prince Edward has been show president, but was a visitor to the show in 2006.
Julian Taylor, show director at the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association (RNAA) said: “As many of you will know this year will be a very special year for the show as we are celebrating our 60th anniversary on the Costessey Showground.
“As a result I am thrilled that HRH The Earl of Wessex is President of this year’s show, reaffirming our ‘Royal’ status – something that we’re very proud of at the RNAA.”
The show is one of only seven to have this connection, after a Royal warrant was awarded to the RNAA in 1908 by King Edward VII. It reflects the deep association the Royal Family has with Norfolk, where they continue to spend Christmas each year. As president, Prince Edward will fulfill a busy programme of visits and presentations at the showground during his two-day stay on Wednesday and Thursday.
Mr Taylor said: “The Earl of Wessex is a great supporter of agriculture, so I know the Norfolk community will be delighted to see him here once again at the region’s biggest annual event of the year. We have put together a packed itinerary and hope that many people at the show will have an opportunity to see him.”
