A Norfolk charity has told how Community Cash last year allowed it to continue to support parents going through unplanned pregnancy or bereavement.
Pregnancy Choices Norfolk helps parents to make informed decisions about unexpected pregnancies, and provides support for people who lose pregnancies through miscarriage, stillbirth or termination.
Last year the group was given £1,000 through Community Cash, which paid the rent at its Catton Grove Road offices for four months.
Community groups and charities are once again being encouraged to bid for a share of £50,000 of Sport Relief Community Cash, which is being handed out by the Norwich Evening News in partnership with the Norfolk Community Foundation.
Administrator Jo Ford said the cash injection had been “massive” for the charity, and advised others to apply for this year’s fund.
“We offer our services free of charge, and rely purely on funding and donations. We have downsized a bit and found somewhere a bit cheaper, but we still have to cover our costs. The £1,000 is a massive amount to us. When we make other bids for funding we are up against more competition than we used to be. Everybody is chasing a smaller pot.”
Although it is based in Norwich, Pregnancy Choices Norfolk offers a confidential and impartial service to parents from across the county.
“We give them a listening ear and help them to make a decision on what is right for them and their situation.
“A lot of people we see are struggling with depression or anxiety which can often stem from the loss of their baby.
“Whether it’s termination or miscarriage, we help them with grief or anger and help them to see we can’t change the past but we can give them a better outlook for the future.
“People come feeling there’s no hope and they go away feeling a bit better about things.”
Last year, Community Cash benefited 55 groups and organisations in Norwich, from singing groups to sports clubs.
