As the city prepares for the annual Lord Mayor’s Celebrations, it’s time to tell you about the part you can play in our special coverage.

What it means to me

Evening News assistant editor David Powles on what the celebrations mean to him.

It makes me feel proud and privileged to live in a city where such an event still takes place.

Too many of our country’s historic traditions have been lost over the years, but it’s important for communities to keep links to their past, as they shape their future.

As a child I remember standing on the side of the road in the city as the parade went past in a blur of colour and sounds.

More than two decades later, I’m still doing the same - and the enjoyment hasn’t waned.

Last year was the first time I took my son along - I hope in the decades to come he has the same happy memories of the occasion.

It really is a great way to get friends and family together and build the weekend around some of the many events on offer.

But more importantly it’s a great way to pull together a whole community and celebrate this fantastic city that we live in.

We’re lucky to have this event - so please go out and make the most of it.

The final touches are being put to this weekend’s event, the pinnacle of which is the spectacular Lord Mayor’s procession on Saturday from 5pm.

More than 60 floats will feature at the highlight of Norwich’s calendar year, which is the oldest Lord Mayor’s procession outside the capital.

Our own coverage of this year’s celebrations is set to be bigger and better than ever before – and hopefully that will be with your help.

Saturday’s Norwich Evening News will be a special preview edition with 14 pages of information, maps, schedules and more – plus a very special guest editor. Ahead of that special edition we’d like you to tell us what the celebrations mean to you and why you think it’s important they are still held. Please email
