Drivers have been caught on camera narrowly missing people attempting to divert traffic away from a huge bin lorry fire on the A47 early yesterday morning.

A member of the public had pulled up behind the lorry to help warn approaching cars, but instead traffic is seen swerving to get around them and onto the sliproad, just metres from the burning cab.

The man, who asked not to be named, had left his dashcam running and described the driving he witnessed as 'unbelievable'

'I saw it from a fair distance away and no one else was there so I assumed it had just started,' he said. 'I stopped behind it and there were three or four of us trying to direct traffic away from it. This vehicle was exploding and you have got idiots coming through behind us right past the truck. It is complete ignorance.'

The lorry has burst into flames around 8.25am on Thursday, May 11 on the westbound carriageway, near to the Thickthorn turn off.

The truck - owned by South Norfolk Council - pulled off onto the A11 sliproad, and a Norfolk Constabulary spokesman said three men ran from the vehicle.

Three fire crews were sent to tackle the blaze. And police were waiting for granules to clean up hydraulic fluid on the road to prevent further accidents.

A spokesman for South Norfolk Council said the lorry had been recovered to the council's depot in Ketteringham.

He said an independent investigation would take place into the cause of the fire, but that the council could confirm the lorry was up-to-date with its annual service, six-weekly safety inspection and twice-daily driver checks.

The crew were all unharmed and are back at work today.
