Free activities and events will be held at Norfolk libraries during a weekend aimed at celebrating science, culture and the arts.

Fun Palaces weekend, from October 7 to 8, is an annual, international event featuring 'pop-up' activities aimed at putting culture at the heart of every community.

A wealth of activities has been organised by staff at Norfolk County Council's libraries which have been turned into Fun Palaces of their own.

These include a zombie apocalypse in King's Lynn, where you can learn how to walk like one of the living dead, and try zombie make-up.

Meanwhile, visitors can enjoy an art and science craft activity and try their hand at fencing at the Millennium Library in Norwich.

Visitors to Norwich will also be able to join in the fun in the Early Years library as various forms of transport all powered by balloon are tested and designed.

Visitors can also paint, knit, crochet and craft poppies at Dersingham, and learn about reflexology at Gaywood.

Elsewhere, there is the chance to learn a few simple dance moves at Downham Market, and make a cast of your thumb and get mucky in the garden in Great Yarmouth.

One of the highlights will be in Hunstanton where visitors can join shark-themed events, find out more with staff from the Hunstanton Sealife Centre, and even help make a life-sized shark from recycled materials.

Margaret Dewsbury, chairman of Norfolk County Council's communities committee, said: 'The libraries are offering a diverse range of activities for Fun Palace weekend, with all age groups catered for. From dancing, to crafting to science activities there really is something for everyone.'

Fun Palaces comes just ahead of National Libraries Week, which starts on Monday, October 9.

Inspired by theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price, Fun Palaces are free and participatory spaces in which people come together to share their skills and passion for arts, science, technology, history, crafts, digital and sports; learn from each other and take pride in their community.
