The deadline to raise money for a town community centre has been extended for volunteers behind the project.

People behind the Poppy Centre, currently being built on Stalham Recreation Ground, hope to receive £20,000 from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund.

But in order to get the grant volunteers need to raise £60,000. The extra £80,000 is needed for ground-source heating.

The original deadline was last month but Stalham Town Council heard last night the target had not been reached but the deadline had been extended to this November.

When finished the Poppy Centre will be used by young organisations in Stalham, including Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and the youth football club. The gym club will also be based in the building, and the hope is that adults dropping children at activities will stay for a gym session.

At present the groups meet in various locations in Stalham and surrounding parishes.

The centre, which has so far cost about £460,000, will provide them with state-of-the-art facilities, changing rooms and storage space.

It is called the Poppy Centre because the area where it is being built is a memorial to the town’s war dead.

More than £100,000 has been raised at the Poppy Centre shop in Stalham High Street which sells donations.
