The cordon has been lifted on an area of beach at Hemsby which was closed off this morning following the discovery of what was thought to be an unexploded mortar by a member of the public.

Officers were contacted at around 8.15am after the item was found about 500 yards away from the lifeboat station.

Personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assessed the item and a controlled detonation took place at around 2pm.

Police officers had been keeping the public away from the area where the bomb has been found, which was close to the row of houses which collapsed on to the beach after the storm surge in December.

  • Watched the video expecting to see the explosion, nothing but two soldiers walking backwards and forwards on the beach, obviously getting the mortar ready for detonation and then walking off towards the police standing further away, what a waste of time.
