Video: New German beer hall/sports bar to open in Norwich city centre
A new German beer hall/sports bar is due to open in Norwich city centre next month, and the people behind it are promising it will offer something new for locals and visitors alike.
Replica German beer halls may have taken an eternity to catch on in the UK, but at long last they are now opening at towns and cities across the country.
Norwich-based businessman Steven King is behind the new sports bar/party venue/German beer hall on two floors that is opening in five weeks’ time near to his successful Bar 11 venue in the city centre.
Mr King had the idea for the new venue, which will be called Stadia, after visiting the Bierkeller German Bavarian bar in Liverpool.
The new £800,000 venue in Upper King Street will be based on a German beer hall downstairs, with two-pint steins of beer on sale, while upstairs there will be a 26m circumference bar counter shaped like a hot tub with sport on TV and DJs.
Customers will be able to buy keypads worth £10 or £20 to pay for fonts of beer for groups or parties.
The new venue is set to create 36 new jobs and is due to open on May 22.
The building, which has been closed for several years, has previously been known as Cafe Maximo, The Office and Pitcher and Piano, and was Norwich Union offices before that.
Mr King said: “We went to the Bierkeller in Liverpool which was really busy and we felt it made sense. They had big and small glasses available, including the steins that are so popular in Germany. In our German beerhouse there will be big wooden tables, an oompah band and steins of beer like in a German beerhouse. We will be serving Becks German beer to start and then later a craft beer. There will be food downstairs but just burgers.
“And upstairs will be a sports bar/party venue. There will also be pole dancing for parties and Djs. The venue will be open seven days a week from 11am.”
He said that Bar 11 enjoyed its busiest ever Saturday this month with 1500 people coming through the door.
When it opened in September 2011, the idea of a ‘high-end’ London bar took a while to get going, but it has become one of the ‘in’ places to go to. It employs 36 people.
