Shoppers were stopped in their tracks as a Blues Brothers flashmob leapt into action to launch Norwich’s dedicated smartphone app.
The Discover Norwich app, available for Apple and Android phones, includes an interactive map, bar and restaurant directories and comprehensive what’s on listings.
Designed by Norwich Business Improvement District (BID), it is aimed at both visitors and people living in the city, to make sure they can get the most out of their time in the city.
And leading from the front at yesterday’s launch in Gentleman’s Walk was executive director Stefan Gurney, dressed as Jake Blues, who was joined by students from Norwich venue The Garage and other volunteer dancers.
He said: “The app is for visitors and people from Norwich. If you are a visitor, it’s got maps, it’s got details on shops, bars, businesses; if you’re someone who lives or works in Norwich or comes into the city, it’s got lots of different information around events and activities that are going on.
“It’s something you can keep on your phone and it will be relevant every day when you come in to find out what’s going on – whether that’s a large festival, an act at the Forum or someone doing a flashmob in the city centre.”
Teams of Norwich BID’s city hosts were on hand to tell people about the app and help them download it, and hand out more than 3,000 Easter eggs to those who had already done so.
The free download was developed in response to other national tourism apps which failed to get beneath the surface of the city, said Mr Gurney.
“We found that there were many apps done nationally and we looked at them and realised that what they didn’t have was any uniqueness to the people who live in the city.
“We wanted to do something that would give information to those people and keep it relevant.”
The Discover Norwich app is available to download from Android and Apple app stores.
