It looked like “the morning after the snow before” as broken bits of sledges lay strewn across a city beauty spot.

During the snowy weather hundreds of people have been enjoying the thrills of sledging along the slopes of St James Hill at Mousehold Heath.

But unfortunately some of the thrill-seekers have showed no regard for the area’s beautiful surroundings and left their broken sledges dumped all over ground and in the bushes.

When Evening News photographer Simon Finlay went to take some pictures at Mousehold, he was shocked at the amount of post-sledging debris littering the area and so gathered up a team of people to help clean up the rubbish.

The team included photographer Denise Bradley, digital sales executive Gareth Lewis, digital content assistant Emily Dixon, editorial assistant Siofra Connor, and reporter Emma Knights.

Between them they gathered about 15 rubbish bags full of broken bits of sledges along with a plank of wood, for sale sign, inflatable ring, and other make-shift items used to slide down the slopes.

  • Disgusting behaviour, and well done the EN24 staff for clearing it up.

  • Well done EEN team. Shows how cheaply made these sledges are made. The people who disgarded should have taken them away and maybe returned them to the retailer as not fit for purpose! Maybe they need to take a leaf out of Ted Wyer's book (Item elsewhere on site) and make their own sledges?

  • Stories like this make my blood boil. There's no excuse for this. It's selfish and lazy. If only there was some way of catching up with and punishing the scum bags who think it's ok to leave their old junk for others to clean up.
