A north Norfolk farmer had a dramatic homecoming from holiday when fire broke out in outbuildings as he sought to sleep off jet lag.

Mike Pardon from Trunch near North Walsham had just come back from a cruise to Alaska when the blaze broke out in a pair of old outbuildings.

Fire crews from Mundesley, North Walsham, Sheringham, Cromer and a water carrier from Hethersett dealt with the fire at Rookery farm on Brick Kiln Road.

Crews were called at about 8.40pm and left at around 1.40am. The smoke could be seen for miles around.

Police were also on scene to control the roads surrounding the barn.

Mr Pardon said: “It was mostly old wood, and a fibreglass boat in two old outbuildings down the farmyard.

“We had just got back from Alaska three hours earlier. I had not slept for 24 hours and was going to bed.

“The firemen did a great job. It looked a lot worse than it was,” he added. “We don’t know what started it.”
