A group of stranded horticulturalists have safely made it back to Great Yarmouth after becoming trapped on a holiday island.

The seven strong party from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston in Bloom got stuck in Guernsey due to bad weather, but managed to make their way back to Norfolk’s shores after catching one of the last flights off the island last night (Tuesday).

The group, including in bloom coordinator Sue Hacon and vice chairman of Norfolk County Council Jim Shrimplin, travelled to the Channel Island on Friday for Saturday’s final of the Britain in Bloom competition, where they scooped a silver gilt award and a discretionary tourism accolade.

But their jubilant celebrations withered to frustration after thick fog grounded their flight home on Monday and continued to linger over the island yesterday.

The delay meant two of the group missed a trip to Llandudno in Wales with Great Yarmouth’s Tourism Authority and another, Donna Bird, missed her wedding anniversary for the first time in 41 years.

Speaking from her Bradwell home this morning Mrs Hacon said: “The bloomers have landed!

“We got on one of the last flights out of Guernsey. There was a break in the clouds so they got as many off as they could.”

The group flew from Guernesy to Gatwick, got a taxi to Stanstead and finally arrived home at 10pm.
