The light blue panels, which cover the entrance to the bus station, came off in gusty winds which continue to pummel the town this afternoon.

Crews from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston were called to the scene just before 1pm, and used an aerial ladder platform to check the structure and secure it.

Police were also called and closed off Temple Road while crews worked at the scene.

Thaine Hacon, watch manager at Great Yarmouth, said: 'When we arrived one panel had come out and the wind had got behind them and forced three more out.

'We have cordoned off the area so it's safe for the public and we're just going to secure the remaining panels in place so they don't come down.'

Jolene Sykes, who works in Spick and Span dry cleaners opposite the bus station entrance, said: 'I just saw everyone turn up and looked out the window and saw security guards closing the road off and the panels on the floor.'

Buses were also being disrupted due to the road closures, but routes have now returned to normal.

A spokesman for First Buses said its services were unable to get to Market Gates between 2pm and 2.30pm.

They added: 'Our services were diverted via St Nicholas Road, Nelson Road and Deneside before stopping outside BHS.

'Owing to the diversion, we experienced delays of up to 10 minutes on some services. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.'
