UKIP has thrown down the gauntlet in Great Yarmouth and vowed to build on its county council triumphs by winning the parliamentary seat there.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

In an intriguing match, government communities minister Brandon Lewis will come up against his former campaign assistant, Matthew Smith, who helped him win the seat from Labour in 2010.

A recent survey by pollsters Survation predicted that Yarmouth was one of eight seats nationally that UKIP might claim at the next general election.

And Mr Smith, 25, who vanquished the town’s former Labour MP Tony Wright when he was elected as a UKIP county councillor earlier this month, is confident he can topple his former Tory boss on the national stage.

Announced as UKIP’s prospective parliamentary candidate today, he said: “I am delighted to be selected for an area I know very well and truly love.

“To have the chance to fight to represent the people of Yarmouth is an honour. Unlike previous politicians who were parachuted in to make a name for themselves my focus and drive is to serve the local area.

“And I do fancy my chances. Victory is not beyond the realms of possibility.”

Mr Smith, of High Street Gorleston, grew up locally and went to Lynn Grove High School and East Norfolk Sixth Form College.

  • before last local election, i asked the ukip canvasser who came to our door what their policies were. he answered "we want more white, English policemen" and then had to jump as the door slammed in his ignorant face. i can't remember the last time i saw a non-white police man or woman in the Yarmouth area

It was like giving them a loaded pistol that they pointed straight at their own heads. I know enough UKIP people to know that their wingnuts will do exactly the same thing.

  • Would anyone like to tell me how Lewis and Wright represented anyone in GY? Wright, from his voting record, never voted against the Labour government, not once. If anyone here thinks he had any influence in Parliament beyond the insecurity of his seat persuading the former government to chuck a bit of regeneration money to be misused by local councillors they must be fools. Lewis is just Wright coloured blue-pathetic excuses for MPs and probably par for the course for most. Voting UKIP is not about getting anything done for a constituency, it is about putting the wind up the other parties so they might revise their policies. Look at the BBCNews East webs site item about the level of drunken thefts and disturbances in Wisbech Asda-that's why people will vote UKIP. And as someone said, look at St Peters Road, or the Market Place or Northgate Street -addicts ten a penny, the whole place gone to the dogs and migrants by the bucketful and no jobs, no shops.

Well remember Lewis's remarks when returning to Essex after a tiresome days canvassing before the General Election. You could tell he would really rather not be there. Perhaps Matt, who was treated appallingly by the Tories, could grant him his wish. Poetic justice.

Voters are fed up with the main parties fiddling their expenses, not listening to voters, making pre election promises and then forever going back on the promises when elected. UK politics is currently in a very sad and sorry state, voters are fed up and are deciding either not to bother to turn up and vote, or instead vote for a party who is actually offering the UK public what they want, now that is funny or refreshingly popular take your pick?

GY is suffering the consequences of smug and incompetent local government and the dire effects of the last Labour government's policies.Add to that the misery caused by the inability of the current government to sort out the economy and their unwillingness to do something about the social problems caused by Labour's policies and you might think it amazing that anyone in GY voted for the two main parties.

I think a good proportion of them arrived at GY. Lewis and Wright have been yes men for their governments and have done little to improve life in the Borough for the indigenous population. In reality they have only made matters. worse. Labour`s latest wheeze is to parachute in a candidate from outside the Borough, who is in the pay of Unite. Little wonder UKIP stands more than a good chance of taking Yarmouth in 2015. Just watch the results of the 2014 EU elections that will have Labour, the Tories and Lib Dems very worried. UKIP looks as if it will wipe the floor with them. For all those who say UKIP is merely a protest party. That is how Labour started out and look what happened to their fortunes over the years.
