A UEA student has described the moment he fled in terror with five student friends after the taxi they were travelling in suddenly burst into flames.
Liban Ahmed, 21, from Sheffield, was travelling in the back of an ABC Taxis Mercedes minibus with five friends when the driver Scott Squires noticed smoke coming from behind the dashboard and pulled over on Unthank Road, near the junction with Beechbank, at 7.45pm on Monday.
Mr Squires then told the passengers to get out and get up the road where they watched as the taxi burst into flames.
Mr Ahmed, a medicine student, said: “The girls were quite upset and they obviously ran away from the car. They kept screaming ‘Jesus Christ, we don’t want to die.’ It was quite frightening.”
The group were heading to a mediterranean restaurant on Norwich Riverside to celebrate the 21st birthday of their friend Rochelle Joseph when the incident happened.
Mr Squires, a taxi driver for 13 years, arranged for a second taxi to complete their journey.
