Student rugby players donned colourful dresses and took to the pitch for a very special charity match in memory of one of their own.

The inaugural Potter Legacy Cup took place at the University of East Anglia's Colney Lane Playing Fields on Saturday and it was a tribute to David Potter, the 1982/83 president of the UEA Men's Rugby Club who died in May 2015 aged 53 after battling a brain tumour.

Mr Potter's daughter Emma, a 21-year-old law student, was among the members of the UEA Men's and Women's Rugby Clubs to compete in the mixed team competition which was raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity and sports charity Moth in a China Shop.

And Mr Potter's wife Alison and their two other children, Rebecca, 26, and Alex, 24, joined the crowds to cheer on the teams and watch Emma and her Annie's Bridesmaids teammates beat Nothing But Balls 42-10.

It was also a trip down memory lane for Mrs Potter, 56, as the UEA was where she first met her husband who was a fellow development studies student.

'David and I were both students here from 1980 to 1983 and now Emma is in her second year. It is great that she is playing on the pitches that David also played on,' said Mrs Potter, who was a member of the UEA's hockey club during her time at the university.

'I have wonderful happy memories of our time together at UEA and we made lifelong friends, many of who came to watch the match. David would be absolutely thrilled that UEA are holding this event and that it is going to be an annual event to raise funds for brain tumour research.'

Mrs Potter, who lives in Thrapston, Northamptonshire, explained how Mr Potter, a project manager for Hewlett Packard, had been diagnosed with an inoperable grade four glioblastoma after suffering from a headache, and that he had died six weeks later. She said she was extremely touched that the UEA rugby clubs had organised the Potter Legacy Cup as such a special tribute to her husband.

'It is a wonderful tribute to him. It is nice to have something positive coming out of such a tragedy. We miss him so much,' she said.

Following the fancy dress match, the fundraising continued on Saturday afternoon with a rugby match between UEA's Women's Football Club and UEA Women's Rugby Club, and in total more than £430 was raised from the events.
