Gary French, 20, from Whitlingham Lane, Trowse, near Norwich, appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner on December 16.

Fergus Harold, prosecuting, said French and his partner, who the court heard was eight weeks pregnant at the time, were having a verbal argument when he pushed her causing her to fall back.

The altercation was heard by a neighbour and police were called but before officers arrived French made threats to harm himself with a kitchen knife “which he held to his throat”.

French was interviewed and admitted throwing a Sky remote at her and pushing her causing her to fall over.

Mr Harold said French, who had been with his partner for three months, had several previous convictions as a juvenile.

Andrew Nickerson, mitigating, said French accepted he had “anger issues” which is essentially what happened here.

He said French was “very remorseful” but “lost his temper following an argument”.

Mr Nickerson, who insisted French should be given credit for his early guilty plea, said the victim wanted French back.

French was sentenced to a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
