It's a challenging time for independent traders.

With empty shops blighting the high street and new supermarkets on the rise, holding down custom has never been more difficult.

But three local businesses in Wymondham aren't letting the doom and gloom get them down, as they join forces to hold a wine tasting event and raise a toast to independent trade - just weeks after a new superstore moved to the town.

Chris White, of Reno Wine, turned to nearby Disney's Deli and Humbleyard Vineyard to help organise the community event.

Since its opening last month, Reno Wine has won over wine-lovers in the town with its unique refillable bottles and range of vegan, vegetarian and organic wines.

'The refillable bottles have been far more popular than I imagined – almost everybody that tries them buys a bottle. We ran out of white wines on Saturday as the recent good weather has put people in the mood for something chilled.

'Support is so strong and the wines are very compelling so customers were happy to buy red wine instead,' Mr White said.

Now, visitors will have a chance to sample award-winning whites and roses from Mulbarton-based vineyard Humbleyard - with locally produced cheese from the well-loved delicatessen on hand for a welcome snack.

Mr Disney said: 'We're very pleased to be able to work with Reno wine to help promote the top quality food and drink offering that our independent shops bring to the town.

'We have many customers who are very discerning when it comes to buying quality cheeses and certainly want to marry that purchase to the right wine, It's great that we can send them to see Chris at Reno, knowing full well they'll get the advice, service and quality product they're looking for, and just a stones throw away too.'

The event comes just weeks after a Morrisons supermarket opened in Wymondham.

Its development prompted mixed reaction, with excitement over the variety tempered by concerns over its impact on the town's independent businesses.

The wine tasting will run on Friday, August 22 from 11am to 1pm at Reno Wine on 15 Market Street.
