Members of the public rushed to free a motorcyclist who had become trapped beneath a car after a collision on the Norwich ring road this morning.

And road closures put in place for recovery to get underway at the Boundary junction caused traffic “chaos” through the morning and early afternoon.

Mile Cross Lane has now reopened after the earlier closure, but delays are continuing around Upper Hellesdon.

Around 10.37am, the motorcyclist and car collided close to the Hellesdon Leather showroom.

John Milton, of Hellesdon Leather, said “three or four of us went running out” to free the motorcyclist, whose arm was trapped beneath the car.
“His arm was stuck under the wheel. He was conscious but there were people on the floor keeping him calm because he was in a lot of pain,” he said. “We just pushed the car forwards to get it off him, it’s what anyone would do really. We just tried to keep him comfortable.”

Mr Milton added the roads have been “chaotic” since the collision, with all four approaches to the Boundary junction impassable and diversions in place around Hellesdon.

He said the junction of Mile Cross Lane and Curtis Road, where the collision took place, was “an accident waiting to happen.”

“If you look at where the bike ended up it could have been a lot worse,” he said.”If someone wants to turn right out of that junction they have to cross two lanes of traffic, and because the Boundary is quite a busy junction, 99pc of the time it is congested.”

The East of England Ambulance Service attended and the motorcyclist was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with arm injuries.

Police closed the road and recovery teams attended the scene to clear the vehicles.

  • What idiots would that be? Enforcement? You mean speed cameras and slow everyone down. How about morons improve their driving and OPEN their damn eyes. So many drivers are so selfish and think they have the right of way and stuff everyone else. Patience and Alertness would prevent so many more accidents and because these morons get away with it this will happen again and again ...

  • And a bit more enforcement would help eliminate the idiots and make a safer place for the rest, the standard of diving seems to be getting worse, it's time for a wake up call before it's too late.

  • The roads are absolute mayhem, accidents seem to happening on an ever increasing basis, simply because there is little or no enforcement.
