Top teenage mathematicians from across the region came together last week for a competition testing their numeracy, communication and teamwork skills.

The regional final of the Senior Team Mathematics Challenge took place at City of Norwich School, featuring students from years 11, 12 and 13.

The contest’s joint winners were teams from Norwich High School for Girls and Bungay High School.

Both teams will now go on to the national final on February 5, 2013 in London.

Rowena Conway, who worked with Lucy Budge, Francis Green-Armitage and Barley Rose Collier Harris from Norwich High School, said early rounds included a cross-number puzzle and a race against the clock to answer 10 testing questions in 40 minutes.

She added: “Finally we had the mini-relay, which involved one pair working out an answer and then passing it on to the next pair so they could work out the next answer. We managed to complete one relay all correct in bonus time.”

The competition was organised jointly by the Further Mathematics Support Programme and the UK Mathematics Trust and is now in its sixth year.

It attracts more than 1,000 teams from schools and colleges across the UK.
