Top chef gives youngsters a taste for fantastic food

A top Norfolk chef paid a visit to a group of Year 6 pupils at St Michael’s Junior School in Bowthorpe to share his love of food with them.
Richard Bainbridge, head chef of Morston Hall, originally from Hellesdon, says he has a passion for funky food with a classic edge and has appeared on BBC2 in The Great British Menu.
He believes in sourcing food locally and looks to put his personality into his creations. Beginning his career washing up dishes, he is now head chef of a Michelin-star restaurant.
Ellie Greenwood, Year 6 class teacher said: “Whenever we bake in school the children get so much out of it.
“So we thought we would aim high and ask if Richard Bainbridge would come in, as he is such an inspiration.”
Mr Bainbridge, who was keen to visit the school, said: “I am dyslexic and found reading and writing very difficult, but I knew from a young age I wanted to be a chef.
“I am happy to give something back to the community by working with the children at St Michael’s and have hopefully opened their eyes not only to the joy of food, but also helped to inspire them to reach for their goals.”
Mr Bainbridge spent the afternoon with the children, showing them how to make some delicious dishes with the help of his sous chef, Ashley Williamson, including one using guinea fowl.
The pupils took part in preparing and, of course, tasting the food.
Chloe Warnes, 11, said: “The food was delicious. It was great to meet a real chef and ask him questions.”
Headteacher Helen Newell added: “We have always believed in the importance of teaching life skills and were thrilled when Richard agreed to come. We loved having him at our school and his visit has had a very positive effect.”
