Cyclists are being urged not to skimp on locks

Cyclists can get tips and information from police on how to avoid becoming victims of theft, at a special event at Norwich’s Forum on Sunday, February 3.

The Norfolk Cycle Show runs from 10am to 3pm and police will also be distributing a limited number of cycle marking kits on a first come, first served basis.

Cyclists are also being urged not to skimp on locks for their bikes, after a number were stolen in the city in January with criminals targeting those secured with poor locks.

On January 31, a bike was stolen from racks at the back of Jarrold in Little London Street and CCTV enquiries revealed suspects used a pair of bolt croppers to break a plastic coated chain which it had been locked with.

Inspector Tony Abigail, from the Norwich East Safer Neighbourhood Team, encouraged cyclists to invest in good quality locks.

He said: “It is easy to forget that your bike is an expensive and desirable possession. It probably cost a lot when new and would cost a lot to replace. With this in mind it’s worth investing in a decent lock. “It makes no sense securing a bike worth £200-£300 with a chain lock which costs £2-£3.

“The lock should be used to secure the bike-stand, wheel trim and frame together, making it more difficult for a thief to take.

“Also, avoid leaving your bike for long periods of time. A number of cycles have been stolen overnight and leaving them on display for more than 24 hours will give thieves ample opportunity to steal them.”
