Bank cards and £70 in cash were stolen during a burglary at a house in Thorpe St Andrew.
It happened in Hillside Road just after 9pm on Saturday when the householder, who had been gardening, disturbed a man leaving the home via the back door.
When challenged the man said he needed a drink of water before fleeing the scene.
The intruder is described as white, about 5ft 4ins and of stocky build.
His speech was slurred and he was wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Phil Paddon from Norwich CID, urged householders to be vigilant to opportunistic thieves.
He said: “Burglars will be on the look-out for gaps in security such as open doors and windows.
“If you are in the garden please be mindful about leaving doors open where someone could get into your house without you seeing.”
Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed a man fitting the description in the area. Anyone with information should contact DC Paddon at Norwich CID on 101 or they could call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
