Third rail death on Norwich to London rail line

A third person has died in as many days after being hit by a train on the Norwich to London rail route.

Men were struck by trains and died on both Wednesday and Thursday morning this week, in Newton Flotman, around six miles south of Norwich.

Today a third man was hit in Bentley, south-west of Ipswich, causing disruption to the service until around 11am.

A British Transport Police spokesman said a man’s body had been found between Bentley and the Halifax Junction in Suffolk.

The spokesman said: “British Transport Police were called to the line between Manningtree and Ipswich this morning, at 7.48am, following a report of a body having been seen on the line.

“This was originally reported to Network Rail by a train driver as an animal strike. An operations manager attended the scene between Bentley and Halifax Junction and confirmed finding body parts.

“This death is being treated as non-suspicious.”

Service operator Greater Anglia advised commuters to travel to and from Norwich via Cambridge.
