Plans have been revealed by Norwich City Council to build its first council homes in 20 years at a site in Bowthorpe.

The landmark move comes as the council’s cabinet prepares to agree a new investment strategy for new affordable homes and approve two schemes that will bring 54 new council homes to the city.

Working in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the council is looking to develop land at Three Score in Bowthorpe for up to 1,000 new properties.

The intention is that the first phase of around 180 homes would include 47 council-owned, as well as eight shared equity, homes – with an initial purchase price of 75pc.

A further seven council and four self-build homes are being proposed for land at the end of Pointers Field in the north of the city, off Aylsham Road.

The news comes amid low levels of house-building, and the subsequent growing need for homes, including those at affordable rents.

Brenda Arthur, leader of Norwich City Council, said: “We know in order to keep Norwich a prosperous and vibrant city, it is essential we do all that we can to meet local need for jobs and homes.”

Building these homes is also expected to provide a much needed boost to the jobs market.

  • Never mind about building on Bowthorpe, get some of those flaming derelict sites in and around the city cleared up, as they are a disgrace.

  • spark, all council houses which are RTB have to be replaced under the tory boy new system, this is painful conundrum for the city council as they have trying their darn hardest to offload all their stock, and have been doing so for years

  • congratulations Brenda Arthur, your proposal to destroy a much loved area of rural beauty with many mature trees loved by dog walkers and others who enjoy our dwindling open space to be replaced by a huge area of more unsightly legoland houses , with no increase in infrastructure etc, are the roads in that area allready reaching saturation point !!, without the added burden of hundreds of additional cars from another attractive!!!! estate. Norwich is being ruined and tasteless homes are being built without any thought to there surrounding environment .Perhaps Brenda Arthur is thinking of re-locating to that area as its going to be a place of tranquil rural peace and harmony..

  • It is a great shame that owners of council homes have been allowed to buy them, effectively breaking up blocks of council owned housing. Just from a kerbside point of view some of Norwich's oldest council housing stock is now old, small, probably poorly insulated but standing on large plots. In the real world of private housing developers have no compunction about knocking down 20s-50's houses and reusing the sites at higher density. I know one site for instance with a small 50s house standing in one third of an acre which is for sale for £200K for redevelopment and will probably get permission for several homes on the plot. I am not saying that occupants of social housing do not deserve a large garden, just that the countryside around Norwich is being built on apace whilst some of the council housing stock closer to the city centre, public transport work and facilities is at relatively low density and in a few places looks as if it could be replaced. Also one is inclined to think that if tenants are renting homes with large gardens their rents should reflect the value of those properties on the open market-retail and rental- and not be subsidised at the point of rental but by housing benefit if necessary.

  • Wickobi couldnt agree with you more ! apart from roads !! Roads are few an far between here no curbs n just about a car width of a sort of road ! houses are built with no thought to the average family having 1 let alone 2 cars its a nightmare and am very surprised that there has been no major accident yet!! On a positive note its an excellant place to park ur car ( if you can find anywhere) with out a valid tax disc i pass at least 6 everytime i go out yes they have been reported but it seems to fall on def ears !! Also an excellant place to buy ur home and take in lodgers some of which take 5 at a time adding more to the parking and congestion problems !! Dont ever go out on a sunday cas u wont beable to get in !!!

  • Good news, if a decade too late. However, I don't know why they want to build shared equity homes. Aside with the red tape involved in it, I wouldn't want to own 75% of a house.

  • This is very good news as homelessness is increasing and building workers desperately need work.spark-before Mrs Thatcher in 1980 it was up to the local council as to whether council houses should be sold or not.The City Council went to court to fight it and lost.
